SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 436,611, dated September 16, 1890.

To allwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SETH MCLEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bolts for Locking Doors; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for fastening or securing doors in a closed position; and it consists in a suitable plate secured to the door-jamb and with a portion projecting beyond the door and provided with a vertical tapering groove of a dovetail form, and a securing bolt or device arranged with a portion provided with ianges adapted to tit into the said dovetailed groove and having a portion projecting over the closed door.

The invention also consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts, as I shall presently proceed to explain, and which will be specifically pointed out in the claims of this specication.

The object of this invention is to provide devices whereby doors may be secured in a closed position in an ettective manner, and which will operate on doors of varying thickness or on doors which have been imperfectly iitted and hung or which have changed in relation to the jamb by shrinkage, sagging, or otherwise. I attain this object by means of the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of a portion of a door and casing with my improvement attached thereto in position for securing the door. Fig. 2 is the same with the parts disconnected to allow the door to be opened. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 1, taken at the dotted line @c Fig. 4 is a face view in elevation of the device with the parts connected together.

c is the face-casing, and d is the door.

e is a plate secured by screws to the jamb ce, with a portion f thereof projecting outwardly beyond the door. On the outer side and facing the door the portion f is provided with a vertical tapering groove g, the wider portion of the groove being at the upper edge of the plate, and the inner lateral wall h of the groove is arranged vertically with thethe piece which projects over the door, the

inner side n thereof, which bears against the door, being slightly rounded transversely; and the piece is. also provided with a stem or handle portion o, and a cord or chain p is secured to the stem and to the casing of the doorframe. When the door is in a closed position, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, the piece j is passed into the groove g, which, having its outer wall 'i sloping inwardly, causes the side fn, of the piece to bear iirmly against the door, and the bevel of the inner wall h, reaching over the beveled side Z of the piece, prevents the piece from turning when the door is pushed outward for opening, so that the door is securel y held in a closed position, while to release the door the piece j is removed, and the cord p then retains the piece suspended until again needed.

Of course it will be understood that whileI have shown and described the groove g as being in the forni of a dovetail and provided with inwardly-beveled front and rear walls, the contour or shape of the walls may be other than a plane bevel and produce the same result, for so long as the outer edge of the rear wall h is arranged to overhang or project into the groove the piece j, being fitted thereto, will be held from turning when in position in the groove and against the door.

It will be seen that while my improved device is simple and easily made and attached to the doorway, it is also exceedingly strong and durable and will adjust itself to the door IOO under all ordinary circumstances, as the settling or sagging of the door or building does not change the position of the parts and any shrinkage or swelling of the door does not affect its operation, as the taper of the piece and groove allows the piece j to be pushed in place until t-he door has a firm bearing against the jamb, and then the piece is in a position to hold the door securely, as should the piece not entirely ll the groove g when the parts are brought to a rln bearing against the door the piece is allowed to tilt outwardly by the rounded side n until the beveledside Zof the piece comes in contact with the inner Wall h, and then the parts are in a position to retain the door in the saine manner as if the piece Were allowed to pass downward to entirely till the groove.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device for securing doors, consisting of a lnetal plate provided on one side of one end portion with a transverse tapering groove having the outer edge of its inner side Wall over hanging or projecting into p the groove and a securing-bolt having one side tapering and provided with lateral edges ltted to pass into the said groove and engage with the lateral tailed -groove having a vertical inner side Wall and a sloping outer Wall, and the securing-piece having one side tapering and provided with beveled edges itted to pass into the said dovetailed groove and with a laterally-projecting flange reaching over the door, substantially as set forth.
