UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDXVIN L. DET\VILER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO J. E.
SWARTZBAUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
I FI'LT ERING-JOINT AND CUT-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,171, dated September 9, 1890. Application filed June 10, 1890. Serial No. 354,959. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. DETWILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements'in filters designed more especially for use for preventing the leaves, dirt, and other foreign substances from entering a cistern or other-receptacle through the leaders of the rain-water spout. It is designed to be affixed in any suitable way to the side of the house or in any other desired position where it will have communication with the down-spout, and may be thus secured in any well-known way, such as by lugs and encircling bandsor any other provisions suited to the location.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device of this character by which the Water will be thoroughly filtered in its passage through the device, a series of screens of varying mesh being provided and all made removable, suitable provisions being made for the removal of the debris as it accumulates.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the followingdescription, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and which is a vertical section through my improved filter.
Referring now to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates a chamber or receptacle of any suitable material-such as galvanized iron, tin, or other material suited to the purpose-and of any preferred form, preferably, however, cylindrical. It is divided horizontally by the partition A.
O is an inlet-pipe extending through the top and also through said partition and rigidly held in place in any preferred manner. It is designed to receive or be connected with a down-spout, (not shown,) and, if desired, more than one inlet-pipe may be provided, so
as to receive the water from more than one down-spout or branches. Y I
D is a pipe extending through the partition A and through the bottom of the chamber A, extending, preferably, a short distance above said partition, as shown. This pipe is designed to be connected with or to lead to the cistern or other receptacle for the filtered water.
The horizontal partition A has a central opening to receive the filtering devices. They consist of the basket-shaped receptacle E, of some reticulated medium, as wire-gauze of coarse mesh, and has extending upward within the same the conical portion E of like mesh.
F is a conical. screen of reticulated mate rial of finer mesh than that of E and E, and is carried by an encircling band F, substantially Z-shaped in cross-section, as shown in the drawing, he horizontal portion of which rests upon the partition A, surrounding the opening therein, and is designed to thus support the filtering devices.
Secured to the cone F and arranged within the same near its base is the convex cap or cover G, whose mesh is the same as that of the parts E and E. These parts E, E, F, and G are held together detachably bymeans of the vertical rod H, which passes through the apex of the two cones and at its upper end provided with a loop or handle h and at its lower end passed through spider-arms h, attached to the base of the cone E, and beneath the same receiving a nut h engaging the screw-threaded portion of said rod. These parts are thus held together, so as to all be removed together, if desired, but allowing of their ready separation for-repairs, the replacing of any one part, or for any other purpose.
I is a cylinder of reticulated medium of very fine 1116811 removably inserted within the upperchamber of the receptacle A, with its lower end fitted within and held by the vertical upper portion of the ring F. It surrounds the cone-F, and at its upper end is provided with a strengthening-band a.
J is a cover or cap fitted over an opening in the top of the receptacle A, and is provided with depending and annular flanges, as shown, to keep the same in place and to steady the cylinder 1, as shown. It may be locked in place in any suitable manner.
In the bottom of the chamber A there is an outlet-aperture communicating with the discharge-neck b, and this aperture is normally closed by the valve 0, carried by the rod (Z, which extends upwardly to the top of the chamber A, and near its upper end is provided with a notch 6, having an inclined approach, as shown in dotted lines, and adapted to engage a stopfon the top of the chamber A and hold the valve elevated when it is desired to remove the sediment from the chamber.
The operation is simple and will be readily understood. The receptacle E is designed to be filled with charcoal or some analogous material, and as the water flows into the chamber A from the down-spout through the pipe 0 it first passes through the reticulated medium of the chamber E and cone E 5 thence through the cap G, then the cone F, and finally through the fine screen I and out through the pipe D to the cistern or other receptacle. The course of the water is indicated by arrows. hen the valve 0 is raised, water may be admitted through the pipe 0 to Wash the sediment through the outlet 12. When the cistern is full, the raising of the valve cpermits the Water entering through the pipe C to flow off through the outlet 1) to the sewer or other place of deposit.
What I claim is- 1. The combinatiomwith the chamber having inlet and outlet pipes and horizontal partition, of the reticulated receptacle below the partition with interior conical screen and the screens of finer mesh above the partition, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the chamber having inlet and outlet pipes and horizontal partition, of the detachably-connected screens E, E, and F, the latter arranged above the partition and the two former below the partition, and the reticulated cylinder I, of finer mesh, above the partition and inclosing the screen F, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the chamber having horizontal partition and inlet and outlet pipes, of the connected screens E and F, of different mesh, the cone E, extending within the screen E, the convex cap G within the cone F, and the reticulated cylinder 1, of finer mesh, surrounding the cone F, substantially as specifiedi l. The combination, with the chamber having inlet and outlet pipes and valve controlled outlet, of the detachably-connected screen E and cone F, of different mesh, the
cone E within the screen E, the convex cap G within the cone F, near its base, the cylinder I, of finer mesh, inclosing the cone F, and the ring F, supporting all of said screens, substantially as shown and described. V
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
