J. .H. EVANS.
I STAKE POCKET FOR CARS.
No. 43 ,077. Pafiented Sept. 9, 18 90.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
STAKE-POCKET FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,077, dated September 9, 1890- Application filed April 24, 1890. Serial No. 349,265. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake-Pockets for Railway-Oars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to wrought-metal stake-pockets for railway-cars of the form wherein the blank for the pocket is cut from a strip or length of rolled sheet metal of the desired form in cross-section and then shaped between dies; and it has for its object to so configure the blank or strip in cross-section that when shaped into a pocket the metal thereof is so disposed or located that the greatest amount of the same is at those parts of the pocket requiring to be of the greatest strength to resist the lateral thrust of the load on the stake; and, further, to construct such pocket with a smooth inside bearing-surface for the stake, and so arrange the inner upper and lower edges of the pocket that they will not cut the stake.
My invention has for its further object the provision of means for admitting of applying the stake-pocket to the strap-opening of cars already in use, avoiding the necessity of cutting separate or other openings for the straps for my improved pocket in such cars.
My invention accordingly consists of the combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more particularly described in the specification, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, Wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a car-body and a stake-pocket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 1 1, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a like View on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan of the rolled or formed blank or strip for the pocket. Fig. 5 is an elevation showing cheek pieces or blocks at the sides of the pocket to admit of its straps being inserted in strap-openings in cars already in use. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of said cheek pieces or blocks, and Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a modification.
A represents the side rail of a car or other analogous device; B, the stake-pocket, and O O the upper and lower straps connecting the pocket B to the rail A. Said pocket in crosssection consists of thick upper and lower ends or bands I) b, respectively, which ends or bands may be of any desired width or depth, and from which proceed shoulders or fillets b joining said ends or bands to an intermediate or middle thin part or web 19 as more plainly shown in Fig. 2.
The inner edges 1) of the upper and lower ends or bands I) b are preferably rounded, as shown, or equivalently configured, so as to avoid any sharp corners thereat. The absence of such sharp corners prevents cutting of the stake.
The thickened bands or ends b b of the pocket B locate the greater portion of metal at those part-s of the stake-pocket where greatest strength and durability are required, while the web or body 6 between said ends or hands b I) does not require such strength and durability, and it may be made as thin in cross-section as desired, and as such intermediate thin web 12 and the thickened ends I) b have fillet, shouldered, or corresponding junctions b they inherently form guides or ways for the straps G O to impinge against to hold the pocket B to the rail A, said pocket being formed with side wings or flanges d d, having openings d for the passage of said straps, as is usual.
In applying these stake-pockets to cars already in use it is desirable to use the old strap-openings, and. if admissible, the straps of the said cars. To do this, I provide loose cheek pieces or blocks F, having recesses f at the sides of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 5, to secure the width of bearing-surface for said straps. For new cars, however, such pieces or blocks F are not essential.
If desired, instead of making the inner, upper, and lower edges of the stake-pocket rounding, as described, theymay be straight, as indicated in Fig. 7.
What I claim is- 1. A sheet or rolled metal stake-pocket having top and bottom thick webs or bands I) b, connected by an intermediate thin web or band 12*, substantially as shown and described.
2. A sheet or rolled metal stake-pocket having top and bottom wide thick webs or bands In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in b I), connected by an intermediate thin Web or presence of two Witnesses. band b and said top band I) having an inner rounded top edge, substantially as set forth. 7 JOHN H. EVANS. 5 3. In combination with a sheet-metal stake- WVitnesses:
pocket, the cheek pieces 01' blocks F, sub- FRANK II. MASSEY,
stantially as set forth.
