To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIPI-IALET JosEPH ROL- LINGS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments to Printers Chases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in printers chases, and has especial reference to an improved mechanism for locking the type-form in the chase.

The object of the invention is the provision of an attachment for a chase which will dispense entirely with quoins and blocks, which will save time and labor in locking the form in the chase, and which will lock said form in a firm and reliable manner and prevent the form from becoming loose in the chase.

The object is also to provide means which will be simple, strong, and durable of construction, which can be easily and quickly operated and which will be inexpensive of production.

To attain the desired object, the invention consists of an attachment for a chase having side and end rack-plates, longitudinally and transversely locking bars adjustable on said plates, and dogs, pawls, or detents on said bars for locking and adjusting them on the plates, all as herein illustrated, described, and specifically claimed.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a chase embodying my invention with a form shown in dotted lines therein. Fig. 2 represents a section 011 the line a: 00 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 represents a detail View.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the chase, on the sides of which are formed 01' secured thereto the slotted rackplates B, and at the ends and under the rackplates B the slotted rack-plates G.

D D designate transverse bars, which are adjustable longitudinally in the rack-plates B by means of the dogs, pawls, or detents E, which are carried by said bars and'are provided with springs E, bearing on the under side of the rack-plates for holding the detents in the adjusted position.

F and F designate longitudinal bars, which are adjustable transversely in the end rackplates 0 by means of the detents G, having the spring G, as shown, and for the purpose described.

The operation of the invention will readily be understood. chase and the bars are adjusted or slid on the slotted plates embracing the form and securely fastening it in place, and to remove the form it is only necessary to release the detents from engagement with the rack-plates and slide the bars away from the form, as is evident.

It will be thus seen that I provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive mechanism which may be attached to a chase, which will lock and unloose the form in a moment, which will securely retain the form, and which saves expense, time, and labor.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States- An attachment for a printers chase, consisting of the slotted end and side rack-plates, transverse and longitudinal locking-bars, detents carried by said bars and adapted to engage with the rack-plates, and the springs connected with the detents and adapted to bear against the under sides of the rackplates, substantially as described.
