A. BENJAMIN.
CORSET WAIST.
No. 435,725. Patented Sept. 2, 1890.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BENJAMIN, OF NEiVARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ED\VARD BENJAMIN, OF SAME PLACE.
CORSET-WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,725, dated September 2, 1890. Application filed June 10, 1890. Serial No. 354,909. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BENJAMIN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Vaists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in corset-waists, the object being to provide novel fastenings for the garment and novel means of attaching garments and garmentsupporters to the waist; and with these objects in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described,.and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View of the corset-waist, showing my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the portion of the waist to which the buttons are secured. Fig. 3 is a view of the tape with buttons. Fig. i'is a section on line a: w of Fig. 1, and Figs. 5 and G are details.
A represents a tape, to which the buttons 1 1 are secured. These buttons are secured in the following manner: The tape is passed through the holes or the shank in the buttons and then through a hole 2 in the tape, as shown, one tape being of sufiicient length to answer for the purpose, so that all the buttons for a certain part of the waist are secured in this manner to one tape, and the tape is then secured to the waist conveniently in the following manner, though not necessarily in this way: Button-holes 3 3 are formed between the edges of strips 4 4, of linen or other suitable fabric, in any convenient manner, but preferably by stitching the edges of the strips 4 4 to a strip of cloth 5 or the lining of the waist and by the stitching at the edge of the piece 6 or the outside of the waist. In this manner a hem or envelope is formed for the tape, and the buttons are made to lie just outside of the button-holes. So, in short, the strips 4: A are simply secured at each side of the openings between the inside and outside plies of the corset-waist.
At the hips pockets are formed with transverse slits or holes 9 9, and in these pockets are located tapes A, preferably having about two buttons thereon for the attachment of skirts or other garments. In addition to the tape, a strap 10 is securely stitched or otherwise fastened inside the pocket, and a garment-supporting loop or clip 11 is held by this loop. The end of the tape, after passing through a hole in the tape to secure the button on the tape, passes through a hole 12 in the strap 10. The end is then securely fastened in the pocket between the plies of the waist.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Ilaving fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a corset-waist, the combination, with a tape or other strip of material and buttons, said tape being passed through the buttons and thence through holes formed in itself, of strips of fabric secured between the plies of the waist with spaces or button-holes between their edges through which the tape passes out to the buttons, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a corset-waist having pockets at the hips and a fasteningstrip having buttons thereon secured within the pockets, of looped straps secured within the pockets and through which the fasteningstrip passes and garment-supporting loop or clasp held in the looped strap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED BENJAMIN.
