B. KAYLOR. OAR COUPLING.
No. 435,360. Patented Aug. 26, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
POPP, OF BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,360, dated August 26, 18,90. Application filed April 26, 1889. fierial No. 308,748- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KAYLoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of, the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being .had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved carcoupler; and it consists in a draw-head having a small hook or upwardly-projecting portion over which the link is secured, and a movable lock, whereby the said link is prevented from becoming detached, and a lever for uncoupling the link from the said projection, together with certain other details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improved car-coupler constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side sectional elevation of a modification of my invention.
To put my invention into practice I provide a draw-head a of suitable size and form of construction, and provide the same with an upwardly-projecting hook I), which is either formed integral with the draw-head a or may be detachably secured thereto.
Secured in the draw-head (1, directly at the rear of the hook I), is a piece a, capable of a short backward and vertical movement and operated by a lever cl, which interlocks with the same at the top in a manner that when the said lever dis drawn forward the piece 0 is pressed backward and its forward end elevated. A. spiral spring this piece 0, serves to press the same forward and lock itself beneath the hook b. This operating-lever d is rigidly attached to a horizontal bar g, which extends across the entire front of the car on which the coupler is secured, and the said bar g provided with cranks h, which arrangement enables the operator at the rear of to uncouple the cars without entering between the same.
In operation the link I, entering the drawhead a, strikes the inclined surface 1' on the piece 0, pressing the same backward and at the same time elevating the piece 0, which allows the link Z to fall over the projection 11, at which time the small end 7c of the piece 0 receives the link I, and the weight of the same returns the piece 0 back to position. To uncouple the cars, one of the three levers d h is revolved in the proper direction, which moves the piece 0 backward and at the same time elevates the forward end of the same, which operation carries the link 1 above the hook b.
At Fig. 3 I have shown a modificatiomwhich consists of a vertically-sliding piece 0, operating on the same principle as before described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. The herein-described car-coupler, consisting of the draw-head at, having at its base the hook I), the interlocking piece 0, and spring f, the lever d, rigidly attached to a horizontal bar g, extending across the end of the car and provided with cranks 72., substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head, of the interlocking piece capable of endwise movement and alimited vertical movement within the draw-head, a spring for forcing the interlocking piece to its normal position, a rigid draw-hook 1), arranged in advance of the interlocking piece, and a lever fulcrumed on the draw-head and having a projection which interlocks with the corresponding projection on the interlocking piece, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affiX my signature this 26th day of March, A. D. 1889.
EDWARD KAYLOR. [n s] In presence of-- P. B. REILLY, M. E. HARRISON.
