Description

F. S. GILES.
Watch Case.
Patented VJuly l2, i864.
N. PETERS, PmuLnhogmpher, v/nshmgwn. ma
UNITED STATES PATENT GEETQE.
FAYETTE S. GILES, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
lMPROVEMENT IN WATCH-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,490, dated July 1:2, 1854.
To all whom it may Concern Be it known that I, FAYETTE S. GrLEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ma gie Watch- Case; and I do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to manufacture the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a central section of the casein a plane perpendicular to the dial, showing the f the case by means ot a pivot, about the axis of which they are capable ofturning together in planes perpendicular to the dial of the watch, whereby l am enabled to obviate the g necessity ot` making the entire case double, and yet to change the case from a hunter to an opeuface watch, and rice Versa, without detaching any ot'its parts.
u is the tixed band ot' the case,in which the hinged to it the glass bezel b, the inner back rap c, and the outer back cap d. constitnt e a complete ease which contains and incloses the movement ofthe watch, and which shank k ofthe pendant, and secured by a nut screwed onto its inner end inside of the band a... The cap e is capable of iitting either over the cap d, as shown in black outline in Fig. 2, or over the glass bezel b, as shown in Fig. 1, and the bezel j' is capable of fitting snugly either over and around the glass bezel b, as shown in Fig. 2 in black outline, or over and around the exterior ofthe cap d, as shown in Fig. l.
on is a spring stop attached at one end to the interior ot' the ring a, and having its other end formed like a pin and arranged to pass through an opening in the ring a, and one ot' two holes o o', (see Fig. 3,) in the inner face ofthe block y, for the purpose of securing the said block with the cap e and bezelf in either ofthe two positions represented in Figs. 1 and 2 This catch has secured to it a small knob,
` p, which protrudes through the exterior of a hole in one side of the ring u. By pressing on this with the thumb nail the catch is pressed inward trom the block li, and the said block, with the pivot I, bezel f, and cap c, lett free to turn about the axis ofthe pivot.
then the bezelf and cap e are closed in the condition shown in Fig. l, and the oase forms a hunting-watch, all that is necessary to convert the watch into an open faced one is rst to open the said bezel and cap7 as shown in red outline in Fig. l, then to press the catch I in out of the hole o in the block y1', then to l turn the said bezel and cap andthe said block movement is permanently secured, haring These parts t resembles one kind of open-faced case in eommon use except that the bezel I) and outer cap d are ot smaller external circumference than the band a.
@is the cap, andj'the bezel, which constitute and its pivot Z to the extentot'onehalt a reyolution, as shown in red outline in Fig. 2, and the catch then springs into the hole o and locks the block t', and the cap and bezel may be closed. To convert the watch again into a hunter, the cap and bezel are again opened,
the knob j) pressed inward, andthe cap, bezel,
my invention, attached by hinges g and h to opposite sides of a small block, i, the inner face of which is made iiat. and tted to a Hat surface formed upon the exterior of the band a., opposite to the pendant j, and the exterior Fig. 3. This block ihas riveted, soldered, or
otherwise secured to it a pivot, Z, which is ini sorted into a hole or bearing provided for it in the band u, opposite to and in line with the block, and pivot turned to the extent of halfa revolution, when the catch m springs into the hole c and locks the block i.
lVhat l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The bezel c and capj", combined with each other, and with the case of the watch by means of the hinges g h, block y1', and pivot l, substantially as herein specified.
FAYETTE S. GlLllS.
