SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,861, dated August 19, 1890. Application filed March 15, 1890. Serial No. 344,002. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN L. T. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to a base for furniture, and my object is to provide a platform adapted to support heavy articles-such as wardrobes, book-cases, folding beds, kitchen cabinets, and like articles-and to divide such platform into two parts arranged one in front of the other, one being stationary or immovable and the other horizontally movable to the right or left of the stationary platform, the intention being to provide a suitable basesupport for a combined article of furnituresuch as a combined folding bed and wardrobe-so adapted and constructed that they may be slid the one behind the other when not in use as a combined article; and my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wl1erein Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan of the same with the movable platform removed, inverted, and laid upon the top of the stationary platform to show details; Fig. 3, a detail of the Ways in elevation; Fig. 4, a perspective of a combined article of furniture supported on my base closed; Fig. 5, the same opened; Fig 6, a plan view of Fig. 4:; Fig. 7, a plan View of Fig. 5, and Fig. 8 a plan view showing position of sliding platform changed to the front and showing reverse position of sliding part in dotted line.

A and B represent articles of furniture.

A represents a stationary platform, upon which rests the stationary article and is mounted and permanently secured to a suit able frame-work O,'Whicl1 may be supported upon casters.

B is the sliding platform, longitudinally grooved upon its under side and provided with flanged rollers'H.

G are metallic tracks secured to the frame upon which the rollers are mounted.

G are parallel bars arranged at a suitable distance from the tracks to form ways for the. guiderods I I;

D D are head-blocks secured to the outer ends of the guide-rods I I, respectively provided with casters E, and a bolt F engaging with a socket F upon the underside of B for securing the head-block to the base or platform B. The forward end of B rests upon the block. D as soon as the forward set of rollers are disengaged from the track, while the rear remains upon the frame, the rear rollers e11- gaged with the track. The guide-rods I I and I I. are longitudinally slotted nearly their length and at their ends are provided with pins J, which engage with the slots of the opposite pair for maintaining the alignment and affording a stop at the end of the travel. It is evident that this construction will operate as set forth and that the article 13', resting upon the sliding platform B, may be closed in behind the article A resting upon A, or opened out, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, or if the article he so placed that it is more convenient to do so that it may be drawn out in the opposite direct-ion by using the opposite mechanism. It is also evident that instead of using the sliding base B the bottom of the article B may be grooved and provided with rollers and rest directly upon the tracks and head-block, and the device will operate as set forth I claim- 1. The combination of a stationary platform mounted 011 a suitable frame, a sliding platform mounted on the same frame provided with rollers and havinga head-block secured thereto at its outer end for supporting the same, as set forth, and paralleltracks adapted to engage said rollers secured to the frame and arranged parallel to the stationary frame for supporting the sliding platform, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth.

In a base for furniture, in combination with a stationary platform and a suitable supporting-frame, parallel ways secured to ICC) thesupporting-frame, parallel to and in front of the stationary platform, paired right and left guide-rods arranged and adapted to move horizontally in said Ways to the right and left,

respectively, and head-blocks secured to the outer ends of said guide-rods, adapted to support an article, as B, substantially as set forth.

8. In a base for furniture, the combination of a stationary platform mounted on a suitable frame, a movable platform mounted parallel to and in the same plane therewith, movable head-block arranged at each end of the movable platform, guide-rods attached to the head-blocks, arranged in line with the direction of the movement of the movable platform, whereby the same may be shifted to the right or left of the stationary platform, substantially as set forth.

4. In a base forfurniture, the combination, with a stationary platform and a sliding platform arranged relatively upon the same plane and one before the other and mounted upon a suitable platform, of parallel barsarranged and secured to the frame underneath the sliding platform, forming tracks upon which the sliding platform moves horizontally, substantially as set forth.

5. In a base for furniture, the combination of a stationary platform mounted on a suitable base-frame, a relatively sliding or movable platform mounted on the same frame in the same plane, paired slotted guide-rods connected to the movable platform and arranged in ways upon the frame parallel to the stationary platform, one pair of said guide-rods being movable to the right and the other to the left of said stationary platform and havthe purposes set forth.

6. In a base for furniture, the combination of a stationary base, a suitable supportingframe, tracks G, secured to the frame-bars G, arranged parallel to tracks G at a sufficient distance therefrom to form ways for guiderods, guide-rods arranged in the Ways and adapted to move horizontally therein, headblock D, secured to the outer end of guiderods and moving therewith, provided with casters E, and a catch F, for engaging an article resting thereon, substantially as set forth.

7. In abase for furniture, the combination of a stationary platform mounted on a suitable frame, asliding platform mounted on the same frame parallel to the stationary plat form, ways underneath the sliding platform, slotted guide-rods arranged in the ways, having pins J engaging with the slots in the oppositely-moving rods, and a movable headblock secured to the outer ends of the guiderods, substantially as set forth.
