UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- JOHN 1V. AVIS, OF ANDERSONVILLE, TENNESSEE.
WAGON-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of letters Patent No. 434,055, dated August 12, 1890.
i Application filed May 5, 1890. Serial No. 350,671. (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN \V.AVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andersonville,in the county of Anderson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Vagon-Brake, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in wagon-brakes.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of wagon-brakes and enable the same to be ap- -plied by a direct pull instead of the usual I designates the body of a vehicle, which has journaled upon the axle 2 a rock-shaft 3, pro vided at one end with an upwardly-projecting arm 4 and at the opposite end with a depending arm 5. The depending arm 5 projects slightly forward and is provided with a series of perforations G, through which passes a pin that connects the bifurcated end 7 of a rod 8 to the arm 5, and the other end of the rod S is provided. with a strap, between the ends of which is pivoted a brake-bar 9, having brake-blocks 10 at its ends arranged to engage the wheels 11, and when the rockshaft is partially rotated the brake-blocks are carried into or out of engagement with the wheels. The bar 9 is suspended from a bar 12, secured to the reach and provided'at its end with depending plates 13, which are perforated and connected with eyes 14 of 4the brake-bar by links 15, and the said brakebar is held normally out of engagement with the wheels by a spiral spring 16, having one end centrally secured to the brake-bar and its other end secured to the front end of the reach 17. The arm 4 ofthe rock-shaft is connected by a rod 18 with the lower end ofv a vertically-adjustable-lever 19, fulcrumed between plates 20 and 21. The plates 20 and 21 are secured to the side of the vehicle-body 1, and have pivoted between their ends nearest to the wheel thevert ically-adjustable lever 19, which is provided with a series of perforations 22, and the said plates have pivoted between them at a point intermediate of their ends an operating-lever that is connected to the upper end of the vertically-adjustable lever by a plate 23, having its ends bifurcated to receive the said levers. By this arrangement of parts the brake-blocks are brought into engagement with the Wheels by a direct pull upon the operating-lever 24, which is drawn rearward instead of being moved, as has heretofore been the case in this class of brakes. The operating-lever is provided with a vertical flange arranged to engage a rackbar 25, whichjs secured to the side of the vehicle-body and provided with a guard or keeper 26. The outer plate 2l is provided with a curved portion 27 and an inclined portion 28, and the front ends of the plates 20 and 21 are separated by a washer, which preserves the parallelism of the parts. per edges of the brake-blocks are provided with adjustable scraper-plates 29, arranged to remove the mud from the tires of the wheels and secured to the block by set-screws 30, the plates 29 being-provided with slots 31.
It will readily be seen that the wagon-brake is simple rand inexpensive in construction', capable of direct operation, and is adapted to be applied bya rearward pull upon the operat ing-lever. A
In a wagon-brake, the combination of the rock-shaft provided at one end with a depending arm 5, adj ustably connected with a spring-actuated brake-bar, and having at its other end an upwardly-projecting arrn- 4, the plates arranged parallel with each other and secured to the side of the vehicle-body, the outer plate having the curved portion 27 and the inclined portion 2S, the vertically-adj ustable lever 19, pivoted between the rear ends of the plate, the operatinglever 24, pivoted intermediate of the ends of the plates, the rod 18, connecting the lower end of the vertically- The up? as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as J. C. SCRUGGS, J. F. DUNCAN.
