To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MIDDLEBY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Ovens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bakers ovens generally and particularly to portable ovens, so called.
It is the object of my invention to provide means whereby gas escaping from the mouth of the oven when the door of the same is Opened may be carried into and conducted through a pipe or flue to the exterior of the building in which the oven is placed, and also to provide new and improved means for supporting the inner bricks or tiles and connecting the same to the outer metallic casing.
My improved oven comprises a gas-damper arranged over the mouth of the oven and beneath a flue or pipe which may communi cate with the chimney in such manner as that when the oven-door is closed the damper will be automatically operated to close the flue and when the oven-door is opened the damper will of its own gravity swing down, so as to open the said flue and be in position to deflect or conductthe escaping gas into the flue orpipe, and it also comprises the improved detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts in all of the views.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my improved oven. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing the construction of the mouth and the arrangement and operation of the gas-damper. Fig. 4 is an end view of a brick or tile used in the construction of the roof or ceiling of the oven.
In the drawings, a designates a metallic casing, of suitable form and strength, which may be supported upon legs or standards I), arranged at necessary intervals. v
c designates metallic I-beams, or metal beams of other form, adapted to rest upon and be supported by the frame, which beams in turn support tiles or bricks cl, forming the bottom or floor of the oven, similartiles or bricks 6, arranged on edge around the bottom h of the tiles g, the edge of the narrow flange i resting against the web of the girder and the wider flange j extending beneath the said girder and abutting against the like flange-of the tile 9 on the other side, and in this way completely covering the. girder and protecting it against the direct action of the fire in the oven, and consequently against unequal expansion. With the construction described a space will be left between the lining of the oven and the outer casing, which space may be filled with sand, earth, or other substance that may be readily and cheaply procured and that will serve to retain the heat in the oven.

n is a door hinged below the pipe or flue m and constructed and arranged to be engaged by the door Z, so that when the latter is closed it will engage and move the former, and when the door Z is opened the door 72 will by its own gravity be opened, swinging from the full to the dotted line position of Fig. 3, opening the pipe or flue m and serving as a deflector to deflect and conduct the gas escaping from the mouth of the oven into the said pipe or flue.
0 is the ash-box, over which the fire grate is arranged, said ash-box being provided with doors and means for regulatmg the draft when a fire is burning in the oven.
p designates links or buckles whereby the portion of the frame supporting the interior walls or lining of the oven is'connected with the casing. By these connecting means danger from displacement of parts through expansion and contraction is avoided.
q designates ribs connected with the supporting-frame proper and extending upon the outside of the casing to strengthen the same.
Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, I declare that what I claim is- 1. A portable oven provided with a mouth and a hinged door to open and close the same, in combination with a gas-flue over the mouth of the oven, and a swinging door to open and close said flue controlled by said oven-mouth door, substantially as set forth.
2. In a portable oven provided with a mouth and door Z, in combination with a .flue m above the oven-mouth and a flue-door n, pivoted at its upper end and having its lower end arranged to be engaged by the door I to be opened and closed thereby, as set forth.
3. In a portable oven, the combination, with the outer metallic casing, of the inner metallic frame, the brick or tiles supported thereby, and the links or buckles 1), connecting said frame and easing, substantially as set forth.
