STEAM-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,834, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed August 21, 1889- Serial No. 321,447. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Engines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
' My invention relates to steam-engines; and it consists in the employment of two pistons simultaneously operating in a single cylinder, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a sectional view of a cylinder and pistons embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents the device as applied to drive-wheels of a locomotiveengine or analogous machine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cylinder having two independent steam-chests arranged upon opposite sides of said cylinder and adjacent to the ends thereof, and having a slide-valve B in each, and suitable mechanism for operating the same. Two pairs of ports 0 and D are formed in the cylinder in connection with one of the steamchests, and the other pair with the chest opposite, so that the exhaust-ports D are diagonally opposed to each other and adjacent to the ends of said cylinder, and the ingress-ports G centrally located on opposite sides of the cylinder. The portion of the cylinder A opposite each of the ports D is closed to thereby permit an exhaust to take place at opposite and diagonal portions of the cylinder, as stated. This arrangement provides for an entrance and exhaust from the cylinder in two directions, and by means of the live steam entering the cylinder from opposite sides the impact thereof is more uniformly distributed against the pistons and with greater pressure than would be attainable from ingress'of the said live steam from one side only, as in the latter instance a portion of the force or power of said steam would be spent before covering the surfaces of the pistons.

The steam-chests 3 have means of supply and exhaust, rendering each complete with the two functions which are necessary, in view of the construction of the cylinder, and which is advantageous in a uniformity of impact of the steam against the pistons, as set forth.
Within the cylinder are mounted two pistons E, having rods F attached to the outer sides of said pistons, and move through opposite ends of the cylinder, and are adapted to be connected to suitable driving mechanism of a stationary locomotive steam-engine. The pistons E have an equal stroke and travel, preferably in the same parallel path in opposite directions, though, if desired, the path of travel of said pistons may be arranged at an angle. The stroke of the pistons E is regular, and they start from and return to the center at the same time.
The steam entering through ports C impacts against the pistons'simultaneously with equal pressure and forces the same outward or toward the end of the cylinder. The slidevalves B are so connected with the pistonoperating mechanism as to close ports 0 and open ports D at or near the end of the outer stroke, and the steam confined between the pistons is exhausted through port-s G and ports H, the live steam entering ports D and impacting against the outer surfaces of the pistons E to cause a return-stroke thereof, and is exhausted on the outer stroke of said pistons through ports D, as will be readily understood.
The advantage gained in the use of my improved device consists in the utilization of a given pressure to operate two pistons with equal power without increasing said pressure.
My improved construction is adapted for use with different classes of steam mechanisms, but is especially adapted for service with a locomotive-engine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a steam-engine, the combination of a cylinder A, having central ports 0 in alignment with each other and ports D on opposite sides of the cylinder in a diagonal position, the portion of said cylinder directly opposite said ports I) hekng' closed, the pistons l E in said cylinder and having; their rods F extending through opposite ends of the cylinder, chests B, arranged diagonally opposite to each other over the ports D and 0 adjacent the ends of the cylinder, slide-Valves in said chests, the said ports C and D, together with an exhaust-port II, all formed in the cylinder A, completing the individuality of supply and exhaust of each chest, and the links (3011- re necked to the stems of said slide-valves, substantially as described.
