SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,137, dated February 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, JOSEPH MASSEY, of Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and ImprovedHat-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description My invention relates to that class of hathangers usually applied to stiff hats; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient device by means of which a stiff hat may be firmly suspended from a peg, nail, or other suitable object without the liability of being easily displaced or knocked down, and thus bruised and soiled.

To this end my invention consists of a thin metal strip having suitable supports beneath the sweat-band of the hat, said strip extending from end to end or side to side of the hat and following the outline of the crown, and having a springactuated hanger pivoted thereto, the end of which is provided with a ring or loop adapted to be swung above the rim of the hat and hung upon a nail or peg.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional view of a hat provided with my invention and hung upon a nail; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hanging attachment before it-is placed in the hat, a part being broken out.

The strip Ais made of thin metal and is shaped to fit the crown of the hat B. It is long enough to reach from one side of the hat to the other, and follows the outline of the crown.

Each end of the strip A is provided with a T-shaped foot 0, which is curved to fit the inside of the hat B. The feet 0 are provided with inwardly-turned lugs, which form clasps a, in which the ends of the strip A slide. Each of the feet 0 is also provided with a headed stud b, which fits into key-hole slots at in each end of the strip A, and the studs 19 and slots cl thus afford means of adjusting the length of the strip A to the size of the hat in To change the length of the strip A, one of the slots (Z is simply slipped from the stud b and another slot placed over the stud.

Pivoted to the ears 6 of the strip A is the hanger D, the end of which that is pivoted to the ears e is in the form of a prism and rests upon the elliptical spring f, which is attached to the strip A and passes between the ears 6.

The hanger D is long enough to reach above the rim of the hat B, and the free end is pro vided with a ring or loop g. The hanger D should conform in shape to the strip A, as

when the hanger is not in use it is swung up against it and should fit closely to it. lrV hen the hanger D is swung up or down, it is held in place by the spring f, which presses against the prism-like end of the hanger, where it is pivoted to the ears e.

The device is put together as described, and as shown in Fig. 2. To insert it in a hat, the feet 0 are placed beneath the sweat-band on opposite sides of the hat, and the strip A will press upward against the crown. The length of the strip can be adjusted, as described, and the hanger D will be tipped up against the strip A. WVhen it is desired to hang up the hat, the hanger D is pulled down and the loop or ring g placed over a peg.

This device may be made of any suitable material, metal preferred, and should be as light as possible and have the necessary strength.

It will be observed that this invention not only provides means of hanging up the hat,

but the strip A supports the crown and pre vents it from being dented.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a hat-hanger, the combination, with a strip extending from side to side of the hat and following the crown, said strip having adjustable feet attached to the ends thereof and adapted to fit beneath the sweat-band of the hat, of a hanger pivotally attached to said strip, said hanger being provided with a suitable ring or loop by which it may be suspended, and with a suitable spring to'hold it in open or closed position, substantially as described.
