' J. H. SPRING. GOMBINEDERASER, ENVELOPE OPENER, AND CIGAR CUTTER. No. 421,874. Patented Feb. 18,1890.
T [NJ ENJOY? urn/mesa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. SPRING, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED ERASER, ENVELOPE-OPENER, AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,874, dated February 18, 1890.
Application filed July 3 O, 1 8 8 9.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN 11. SPRING, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Eraser, Envelope- Opener, and Cigar-Gutter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in erasers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same whereby a combination implement is produced which may be used as an eraser, an envelope-opener, as well as cutting the tip of a cigar, all as will be hereinafter explained.
The annexed drawing, to which referenc is made, illustrates my invention, in which the figure represents a side view of mydevice.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawing, A designates the handle of the implement, which is provided on its edges with grooves a a, a kerf b at one end for the knife B, a slot or end kerf c for the insertion of the rubber O, and lateral slot (1, having at its rear end an enlarged opening 6 for a purpose presently explained. This blade B is constructed with the cutting-point f for erasing, and a rear cutting-edge g, which terminates in points it, for opening envelopes, and the same is placed within the end kerf b, and the points it extend into the grooves a a, while the pin or knob 2 projects through the side slot d and serves to operate the blade in projecting it from the handle or withdrawing it within the same or kerf b.
It will be observed that the blade serves a threefold purpose-via, an eraser, a cigarcutter, and an envelope-opener. When it is desired to open an envelope, the edge of the latter is'placed within either groove a a and is caused to come in contact with the cutting-points 71, which will out said envelope bydrawing the handle or forcing the envelope against it, and to cut the point of a cigar off the same is inserted in the enlarged opening of the side slot, after which the blade is drawn inwardly by the knob aforesaid, when the rear cutting-edge thereof will cut the tip from the cigar, said tip escaping from the opening on the opposite side of the handle, while the knife remains in this position and Serial No. 319,215. (No model.)
ing as a stop for said knob, as shown in the figure.
Within the kerf in rear of the handle is inserted one end of a rubber O, which is held in place by a screw or screws j, which can be removed when it is desired to replace the worn rubber with a new one.
It will be seen that I produce a combina tion implement, which'can be carried in the pocket with safety, and is easily and quickly operated, as well as being inexpensive to manufacture, and at the same time it is durable.
Having described my device, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
1. The handle provided with the side slot, edge grooves, end kerfs, and blade having front and rear cutting-edges, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The handle provided with the side slot and enlarged opening, and edge grooves, end kerfs, and the blade having front and rear cutting-edges and provided with the knob, for operation as set forth.
3. The combination, with the handle provided with the end kerfs, grooves, and slot having the enlarged opening, the blade constructed with front and rear cutting-edges, and knob for operating the same, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The within described implement, consisting of the handle provided with the edge grooves, end kerfs, and side slot, the blade having a front and rear cutting-edge adapted to slide within the handle, the rear cuttingedge projecting into the grooves, and the rubber removably secured to one end of said handle, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. SPRING. Witnesses:
J. B. DAILEY, B. F. FRIOK.
