' U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- JULIUS TEUFEL, OF STUTTGART, WURTEMBEEG, GERMANY.
BAN DAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,635, dated February 18, 1890.
Application filed October 19, 1889. Serial No. 327,600. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JULIUS TEUFEL, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Wtirtemberg, and a resident of Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of Wiirtemberg, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stays for Supporting the Back and Holding it Straight, of which the following is anexact description.
I11 order to make my invention more clear, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters represent similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a back view of the improved support or stay. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a horizontal section through the back piece.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus which shall serve to hold the shoulders of persons of both sexes back and keep the back in an upright position, so that a good figure may by this means be attained and without any rubbing or causing inconvenience or pain to the bearer.
In the drawings, A is the back-piece, c011- sisting of steels c c 0, covered with some soft fabric a u to prevent their pressing unpleasantly on the body.
To the upper part of the back A are pivoted the two steels a at. These steels are separately pivoted at e, so that each may be moved up or down independently of the other. The steels are further bent back in such a manner that when the arms are fastened in the straps o o the tendency is to press the back-piece A against the back of the wearer and in consequence to draw the shoulders back. The band B, which has the elastic part D, is fastened around the waist. The armstraps o o are fastened to the steels a o. by means of small screws.
The band which comes under the arm 2; o is made of thick round elastic, so that no inconvenient rubbing is occasioned. The fact of the steels a and a being so pivoted ateallows of the convenient movement of the arms in every direction without the least fear of rubbing or catchingor jamming any part of the body. These supports are invaluable for young people of both sexes suffering from weak backs or for generally weakly children, as they strengthen the body and insure a good figure. The cross-steels a and a can also be made in one piece and pivoted at c.
Having thus fully described and ascertained my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, in supports or staysfor keeping the shoulders back, is I 1. The combination of the back piece A with the two steels a a, and with the armstraps o c and waistband B, in the manner substantially as described.
2. The combination of the back-pieceA with the cross-steels a a and waistband B, and arm-straps 'v 12, having the elastic parts o o in the manner substantially as describd.
3. The combination of the back-piece A formed of steels c c 0 covered and connected together by some soft fabric a u, with the cross-steels ct a, arm-straps 'v 1;, having elastie parts 1* o, and with waistband B, having elastic piece D, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS TEUFEL.
