T to whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. SMITH, of Waterbury, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Catches, of which the following description,

in connection withthe accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters 011 the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for .its object to improve the class of garment-holding catches known as the IVarren, it being illustrated in United States Patent No. 159,291, dated February 2, 1875. Thecatch therein described is composed of sheet metal; but in its manufacture-great difficulty has been experienced because of the sharp edges presented in the narrow part of the slot of the catch, and many different plans have been resorted to to remove the sharp corners from the inner edges of the catch; but such attempts have not met with success, because the slot between the edges to be rounded or finished was so narrow as to prevent access to the said edges. 2 5 To improve this class of catches, the metal blank forming the main body of the catch has been provided with a metallic lining to finish and thicken the edge, such improvement being the invention of G. H. Phelps; and it is the special purpose and object of this invention to provide specific means whereby the said lining may be securely held in position.

In accordance with this invention,I have provided the interior of the catch with holding prongs or shoulders, which, when the lining is applied to the interior of the metal blank, are bent down upon and so as to engage or overlap the ends of the lining.

Figure 1 represents a blank embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a metal strip to be employed in the manufacture of the lining. Fig. 3 shows the said metal strip grooved longitudinally. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the grooved strip shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents the grooved strip shaped to constitute a lining. Fig. 6 shows the said lining applied within the blank. Fig. 7 shows the holding lips or shoulders of the blank turned 0 down over or to secure the ends of the lining and retain the same in position in the body of the catch, and Fig.8 a section of Fig. 7 in the dotted line 00.

The metal blank a, cut, preferably, from sheet metal and provided with an open central, substantially-V-shaped slot 10, to leave a bar 2 and edges 3 3 and end 6, isalso provided with two like holding lips or shoulders 12. The metal strip 1), preferably thin sheet metal and of a quality that will bend and not crack, is grooved longitudinally to form a groove 4. (Shown best in Fig. l.) The grooved strip 1) is then shaped substantially as represented in Fig. 5 to form a lining c,

and the said lining is inserted within the opening 10 in the metal blank and crowded down therein until the bent portion 8 of the lining enters and fills the end 6 of the slot or opening 10. The lining so inserted leaves a thickened edge, as best represented in Fig. 8, the said thickened edge, rounded and smoothed, bounding all those parts of the catch which are directly brought into play to hold the fabric, a stocking, sleeve, or other portion of a garment. The lining is represented in Fig. 6 as having its ends abutted against the lips or shoulders 12, and when in proper place the said lips or shoulders are bent or turned down over or so as to engage and hold the ends of the lining, thus retaining the latter in place within the catch.

I do not desire to limit my invention to the exact shape shown for the blank a, constituting the body of the catch, nor do I desire to limit my invention to the exact location shown for the holding lips or shoulders, which when bent over act to hold the ends of the lining in place.

I claim- A garment-supporter composed of a metallic body having a substantially-V-shaped opening and provided with shoulders, and a metallic lining held in said opening by the said shoulders, substantially as described.
