To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OLE BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Easels, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of an easel embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a rear elevation of a portion of the same, a large part of the easel being broken away; Fig. 3, a vertical section of the same, taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a detail elevation, partly in section, of the capped end of one of the bars composing the easel; Fig. 5, an edge elevation of the end cap detached, and Fig. 6 a rear elevation of said cap. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are on the same scale, but enlarged considerably from the scale of Figs, 1, 2, and'3.

My invention relates to certain improvements in ornamental easels for the display of pictures, &c., or for use simply as an ornament in a room, with the picture-frame or other like articlemounted on the easel hinged thereto.

The invention consists in a peculiar ornamental cap for the ends of the rods or bars from which the easel is made.

In the drawings, A represents the side bars of the easel, which are connected by crossbars a near the top and bottom of the structu're. The supporting cross-bar Bis arranged, in the usual way, in front of the said bars and fastened to the latter. The supporting-bar O is hinged to a top cross-bar and performs the usual office of this device.

In order to give an agreeable ornamental appearance to the easel, the exposed ends of the bars A, B, and C are all cut off on an incline, so as to present a sloping surface, as seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings. A cap D of sheet metal, highly polished, is formed of such shape as to be applied to these inclined or beveled ends of the said bars. This cap is somewhat pear-shaped, as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings, and is formed up so that its face cl will be convex, and around the edge is a flange d, bent backward, whereby the cap is made to inclose the end of the bar and fastened thereto, as seen in Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawings. In the drawings there is also shown a depression (I in the center of the face of the cap. This makes the cap a little more ornamental, but is not essential, and the cap may be used with a smooth face or the indentation, as desired. The cap is of highly-polished metal, brass, or any other suitable metal, either plated or not. The

caps are applied to the beveled ends of the bars, as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the

parts being arranged so that the bevels will appear upon the front of the easel. These caps afford a desirable protection for the ends of the bars and give them a very agreeable ornamentation, owing to their shape and the inclination at which they are arranged.

There are shown in the drawings pockets arranged one in front and one in rear of the easel. The rear one is formed by means of a hinged flap F, which is connected at its upper edge by chains fto the back E of the easel. In front there is also a hinged frame G, connected at its upper portion by chains g to the main frame. This makes a pocket at the front of the easel, butis desirable only when the whole structure is for ornament and the frame G is to hold permanently a picture, mirror, or some other ornament. These pockets are not a part of my present invention, however.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
