SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent 'NO. 428,054, dated May 13, 1890. Application filed March 10, 1890. Serial No. 343,284:- (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Valtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented n ew and useful Improvements in Vaporizers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Vaporizers for the purpose of inoistening the air in mills, factories, dwellings, &c.,and itis carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the improved apparatus. Fig. 2 representsa central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line X X shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a detail perspective and cross-section of the pivoted dash-plate, and Fig. 5 represents a detail perspective view of the longitudinally-grooved valve.

CL represents a Watensupply pipe leading from any suitable source of water-pressure, such pipe being provided with a suitable cock, valve, or cut-off I). as is usual in devices of this kind.
a is a bend or elbow secured to the upper part of the pipe at, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To said elbow is secured one end of the delivery-pipe c, which pipe has its forward end provided with an internal tapering valve-seat 0', against which is made to rest the tapering valve-plug d, as shown in Fig. 2. The said valve-plug is provided with fine longitudinal grooves or scratches d (1, through which the water is forced out from the delivery-pipe c in very fine streams against the dash plate or breaker, hereinafter to be described.
The yalve d is held against its seatby means of a lever e, pivoted at e to the end of the pipe 0, said lever being held with proper pressure against the outer end of said valve by means of a springf, havingone of its ends secured to a hook or projection c" on the pipe 0, and its other end adapted to rest in one of the notches e" e" e" on said lever, as shown in Figs. 1 and I make a number of such notches e" on the said lever c, for the purpose of attaching the spring f to the said lever at various distances from its fulcrum, according to the pressure in the delivery-pipe 0, so as to hold the valve (Z against its seat at all times, except when flushing or cleaning its grooves from obstructions or impurities, as will hereinatter-be described.
To ears or brackets g g, secured to the outer end of the delivery-pipe c, is pivoted at g g the dash plate or breaker G, having inclined faces G G, against which the line spray or vapor forced out through the longitudinal grooves or scratches (Z' (1 strikes, causing it to be deflected upward and outward and intimately mixed with the air in the room, thereby moistening it, for the purpose set forth.
G" is an arm or lever preferably secured in a suitable manner to the dash-plate G or one of its pivots, whiclrmay be manipulated either by hand or by means of a suitable rod for the purpose of adjusting the position and inclination of the said dash-plate, according to the direction in which the moisture is to be directed into the room.
Below the pipe 0 and dash-plate G islocated the inclined conductor H, for automatically conveying any liquid dripping from said pipe and dash-plate to the drain-pipe h, that is attached to the lower end of said conductor H, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
If the grooves or scratches (Z (Z in the tapering valve (Z should become clogged up, it is only necessary to take hold of the lever e and swing it slightly on its fulcrum in the di rection of arrow shown in Fig. 2, causing the valve (Z to be released from its seat, and thus allowing the water from the pipe 0 to be forced out all around the said valve, between it and its seat, and thus causing the impurities to be removed from the said grooves or scratches (l' (1. During such cleansing of the valve the dash-plate G is swung to the position shown in Fig. 2, so as to convey the waste Waterinto the conductor H. and to the drain-pipe 7L.
The outer end of the valve cl is forked or notched, as shown at d" in Fig. 5, for the purpose of receiving the lever e, and thus preventing said valve from turning around its axis when being moved from and to its seat while being cleansed. In case the said valve should become worn or damaged, it can easily be removed and a new one put in its plaee at a very small cost, or it may be regrooved, if so desired.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and elai n1 1. The improved vaporizer consisting of the delivery-pipe 0, having a tapering valve-seat e, and longitudinally-grooved tapering valve (Z d, combined with the pivoted dash-plate G, having inclined faces G G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The improved vaporizer consisting of the delivery-pipe 0, having a tapering valve-seat e, and longitudinally-grooved tapering valve (1 (1", combined with the lever e, and spring f, for holding said valve against its seat, and the pivoted dash plate G, having inclined faces G G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The improved vaporizerconsisting of the delivery-pipe 0, having a tapering valve-seat c, and longitudinally-grooved valve (L (1, and spring-pressed lever e, for holding said. valve against its seat, combined with a pivoted dash-plate G, having inclined sides 1' G, and the conductor ll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-t. In a vaporizer, the delivery-pipe c, having tapering valve-seat o, and spring-pressed and longitudinally-grooved valve (Z (1, combined with the pivoted dash-plate G, having inclined sides G G, and a stop-cock or cutoif on the sup ily-pipe, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a vaporizer, the delivery-pipe (1, havintapering valve-seat c, and spring-pressed and longitudinally-grooved valve d (6, combined. with the pivoted dash-plate G, having inclined sides G G, a stop-cool:v oreut-olt' on the supply-pipe, and a conductor 11, having a drain-pipe 71., substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
