IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPING'CARTS- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,746, dated May 17, 1864.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, (Jones A. CARPENTER, of Glen Cove, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dumping-Carts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line :0 :r, Fig. 2; Fig 2, an inverted plan of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in thetwo figures.

This invention consists in applying levers and catches to a dumping-cart, arranged in such a manner that by a single manipulation the front end of the body of the cart may be liberated or allowed to tilt and the tail board also released, so as to admit of the load being dumped, thereby avoiding the trouble and consumption of time now required in releasing the above-named parts separately in order to dump the load.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents the body of a cart, and B the thills thereof, and G the joints by which the bodyA is connected to the thills. These parts may be arranged in the usual way, and therefore do not require a minute description.

D is the tail-board of the body A, the upper end of the former being attached to the latter by means of hookjoints a, which admit of the lower end of the tail-board swinging outward, as usual.

To the under side of the bottom of the body Athere is attached by afulcrum-pin, b, a lever, E, the inner end of which has a spring, F, bearin g against it, the outer end of said lever being notched, as shown at c in Fig. 2, to catch over a shoulder, d, on a plate, d, attached to the bottom of the tail-board. This lever E thus arranged, in connection with the plate d of the tail-board, forms a catch or fastening to secure the tail-board in a closed state against the cart.

To the inner end of the lever E there is connected by a pivot, e, a bar, G. which extends is connected to the bar G by a pivot, f, said arm extending or projecting beyond one side of the body A, and having an oblong slot, 9, made in it, through which a screw or pin, h, passes into the bottom of the body A. The oblong slot 9 admits of a certain degree of longitudinal play of the arm I, and the spring H has a tendency to keep the arm I pressed outward from the body A as far as the slot 9 will admit.

To a cross-piece, J, on the thills B there is attached a plate, K, which projects upward, and has a shoulder, h", at its upper end for the front end of the bar G to catch under. This bar G and the shoulder h of plate K form a catch or fastening to hold the body A down upon the thills, the spring H having a tendency to keep the front end of the bar G under the shoulder h, as will be seen by referring to Fig. 2.

In order to dump the body A, the arm I is first shoved inward in the direction indicated by arrow 1, and the front end of the bar G is thereby shoved out from underneath the shoulder h of plate K. This releases the front end of the body from the thills and allows the former to tilt, and the arm I is then moved in the direction indicated by the arrow 2, which causes the bar G to actuate the lever E and disengage the outer end of the latter from the shoulder at of the plate d, thereby liberating the tailboard and allowing its lower end to swing outward and the load to escape from the body.

When the body is turned down on the thills, the bar G catches under the shoulder h", in consequence of a beveled surface above it, the shoulder d of plate d also having a similar beveled surface, so thatit may engage itself with the lever E.

Thus by this simple means the front end of the body A may be released from the thills and the tail-board D released from the body to admit of the tilting of the body and the dumping of the load by a simple manipulation on the part of the driver, who may hold the reins of the horse with one hand while actuating the arm I with the other.

The arm I, it will be seen, performs the function ofa lever when moved in the direction indicated by arrow 2 to release the tailboard D.
