SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,389, dated April 22, 1890. Application filed April 15, 1889. Serial No. 307,297. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRIFFIN SKINNER Lneuv, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Automatic Self- Loeking Ratchet-Bolt; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dea scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. p, 1
This invention has relation to an improvement in automatic ratchet-bolt locks, and the novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claim, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View of my improved lock with the covering-plate removed. Fig. 2 is asimilar View of a modification, and Fig. 3 is a view of the latch removed.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, K indicates a lock-casing, which may be of any ordinary or approved construction. \Vithin this casin g and arranged longitudinally thereof is aloek-bolt A, which is provided at a suitable distance from its outer end on its upper longitudinal side with teeth, as shown, and its opposite end is reduced to receive a spiral spring G, whereby the said bolt may be shot forwardly when freed from a pawl, which will be presently explained. 'lhis spiral spring G abuts at one end against a shoulder on said bolt and its opposite end abuts against one of the end walls of the lock-casin This bolt is also provided at a suitable point in its re duced portion with a circumferenthl groove R, for a purpose which will be presently ex plained.
11 indicates a cam, whichis shown in Fig. 1 as having a long lever B, which passes out through one of the end walls of the casing. This cam is suitably journaled in the casing and is adapted to normally engage the teeth in the bolt A, a spring being employed to hold the said cam in engagement with the teeth of the ratchet.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown a spiral spring pressing against a short arm M 011 the cam, instead of a flat spring pressing against the long arm of the cam, as shown in Fig. 1. The construction shown in Fig. 2 is mostdesirable when used at the top or bottom of the door and a chain or other means employed to manipulate the cam and bolt.
F indicates a stop, which is arranged on the shank of the bolt so as to limit the forward movement or shooting of the bolt into the keeper.
0 indicates a latch. This latch is slotted, as better shown in of the drawings, and is connected with the inner end wall of the casing. This latch is also provided with a notch D, adapted to receive the lever end of the pawl when it has been depressed and hold its biting end out of engagement with thenotches in the bolt, and it is furthermore provided with a notch E, adapted to engage the circumferential groove It of the bolt A and retain the same in a retracted position, the spring at this latter position of the bolt being contracted and serving to shoot the bolt when the latch has been disengaged. It will be seen that the latch is adapted to be moved freely in and out of engagement with the lever end of the pawl and also the ratchet-bolt.
\Vhen the construction shown in Fig. 2 is employed, a chain or other connection is used, so as to render the parts easy of operation and of being brought within convenient reach of the operator.

I am aware that it is not new to provide a lock-bolt with teeth on one side and to arrange within the casing a pivoted lever adapted to have one end engage the teeth on the bolt and its opposite end extending out of the case, the lever being normally held in engagement with the teeth by a spring and the bolt surrounded by a spring to throw it forward.
Having described this invention, what I claim is- The combination, with a loelceasing. of the bolt having teeth, as shown, and also having the groove R and the stay-piece F, the pawl pivoted. within the casing, with one end adapted to engage the teeth of the bolt and having its opposite end passing out of the casin g, a spring for normally holding the pawl in engagement with the teeth of the bolt, and
