JOHN J. DECKER, OF LEVBEACI-l, NEV YORK.
BORING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,365, dated April 22, 189(k). Application filed October 24, 1889. i Serial No. 328,023. (No model.)
T0 all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. DECKER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Lewbeach, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Boring-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of boring-machines in which a large number of drills or angers are simultaneously actuated for the purpose of boring in wood or similar material; and it has for its obj ect to construct a machine of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity and general efficiency, and in which the bits or angers may be readily removed and rearranged, as may be desired, for the purpose of forming diiferent patterns.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boringdnachine equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is an endV view. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
1 designates the main frame of the machine, which is composed of four vertical posts or uprights 2 2, which are suitably connected by means of transverse and longitudinal braces 3. Two of the posts 2 at one side of the machine are provided with laterally-extending arms or brackets 4, to the outer ends of which is attached a frame 5, between the upper and lower cross-bars of which G 6 is journaled a shaft '7, having a band-wheel or pulley 8,' to which motion may be imparted from any suitable driving machinery.
The inner or adjacent sides of the vertical posts 2 of the main frame are provided with vertical grooves 9, to receive the tongues or tenons 10 upon the ends of the spacing-blocks 11 11 and the supporting-blocks 12. Said spacing and supporting blocks are provided with aligned vertical perforations 13, to receive the connectingdaolts 14;, which may be held securely in position by means of setscrews 15, extending transversely through the supporting-blocks 12. Between thc supporting-blocks 12 and spacingblocks 11 .and on top of the uppermost spacing-blocks 11 are adjusted the plates 16, having bearings for the shafts 17 of the drill or bits 18, which by properly arranging the said bearings'may be arranged in any desired pattern with relation to each other. Any desired number of spac ing blocks and plates may be used. 4A number of the drills or drill-shafts have their bearings in the two lowermost plates. Other drillshafts are extended through the plate next above, and so on, according to the number of drills used. The drill-shafts, which arejou rnaled only in the two lowermost plates, are provided with drums 19, located between said plates. The drillshafts, which are additionally j ournaled in the third plate, are provided with drums 19, located between the second and third plates, and so on, according to the number of plates. Each series of drums is connected by a belt or band 2O with the vertical drum or band-wheel 8, from which motion will thus be communicated simultaneously and at an equal rate of speed to all of the drills.
21 designates a vertically-movable table arranged in the lower part of the frame below the points of the drills, and 22 is a hand-lever, by means of which the said verticallysliding table may be manipulated.
The operation of this` invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The material which is to be perforated may be placed in one or more layers upon the verticallymovable table 21, which is then, while the drills or bits are all being rapidly rotated, moved slowly in an upward direction against the said drills,
`thereby causing the material supported thereon to be perforated with the desired design.
My improved machine will be found particularly serviceable for perforating veneer or wood en seats and hacks for chairs and like material which is to be perforated with certain designs in which the perforations are frequently close together, inasmuch as the arrangement of the operating-pulleys upon IOO the drill-shafts in several tiers or series between the plates 1G enables the operatin belt or bands to be carried from the pulley 8 around the drum upon each one of the drillshafts. It will also be seen that by providing each one of the plates 16 with alarge number of perforations or bearings the drills may be readily changed and arranged in many different designs. This may also be accomplished by exchanging the bearing-plates for others in Which the bearings or perforations have been differently located.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the main frame having the uprights provided with vertical grooves in their inner sides, the supportingblocks, the spacing-blocks having outwardlyextending tenons, the bearing-plates, the connecting-bolts extending vertically through the bearing-plates, spacing-blocks, and supporting-blocks, and the set-screws extending laterally through the latter and serving to secure the connecting-bolts, the drills j onrnaled vertically in the bearing-plates, and the vertically-arranged power-shaft connected by endless belts or bands with drums located upon the drills between the several bearingplates, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The frame having nprights 2, provided with vertical grooves 9, the spacing-blocks 11, and supporting-blocks 12, having tenons 10, working in said grooves, the bearing-plates 1G, the drill-shafts j ournaled in the latter and having drums or band-Wheels, the vertical connecting-bolts 14, the set-screws 15, operating mechanism for the drills, and a vertically-movable table 21, all combined and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto affixed my signature in presence ot' two Witnesses.
JOHN J. DECKER.
