SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 426,257', dated April 22, 1890.

Be it known that I, LOUIS FRIESS, of the c1ty,cou1'1ty, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indicators for Dumb-X'Vaiters and Elevators, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in indicators for dumbwvaiters and similar devices, and has for its object to provide a simple, convenient, and reliable device of the character named which will automatically indicate the location of the dumb-waiter or elevator at any point of its ascent or descent, the indicating device bein g placed at the bottom of the shaft.
To these ends my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as is hereinafter described, and indicated in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference inM dieate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a vfront elevation of the vertical shaft of an elevator or dumbwvaiter with the elevator or dumbwaiter therein, the indieator which exhibits the relative position of the dumb-waiter or elevator being shown in position. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken on the line 2 2 in Fig. l. Fie". 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same, taken on the line -4 4 in FiO. l; and Fie. 5 is a transverse section of the same, taken en the line 5 5 in Fig. l.
In high buildings used for family living purposes it is usual to provide a means for elevation from the ground door of material needed on the different doors above, these being usually known as elevators or du mbwaiters. As ordinarily constructed in apartment houses or flats, there is no means furnished to exhibit to an operator below the exact position of the dumbwaiter or elevator car when in use, and to approximately ascertain this relative location of the du1nbwaiter an operator on the ground floor must insert the upper portion of his body in the shaft and look up, thereby incurring danger from the possible fall of the heavy box or dumb waiter or have dust and dirt thrown down into his eyes.
The device herein represented and about to be described obviates the danger and inconvenience mentioned and exhibits to an operator at the foot of the shaft the exact posi` tion of the dumb-waiter at any point from the foot to the top of the building.
A represents the ordinary rect-angular vertical shaft or transit passage provided for the dumb-waiter B, that is of the ordinary form, being a rectangular box which loosely fits the shaft A, and is provided with a later ally-projecting lug (l, which is adapted to slide in a T-shaped vertical groove d', formed in the side of the shaft A, saidbox being open at the front to receive articles. The dumbwaiter B is suspended by a flexible rope or chain h from the top of the shaft, said rope extending from the upper side of the box to engage a grooved pulley c', carried on a shaft c, thence laterally to' another pulley c2, secured to rotate with a shaft c3, thence downwardly to have connection with a weight CZ, that is of proper size to counterbalance the box or dumb -waiter B, which by equipoise thus afforded may be readily moved to any point vertically considered.
To provide means for vertical movement of the dumb-waiter B within the shaft A, the metal shaft c, whereon the pulley c is mount ed, extends from the rear wall of. the hollow shaft A forwardly, and is journaled at e in said wall and forwardly on a crossbar c', which is stably located at the top of the dumb-waiter shaft A, across its front engag ing the side Walls of the same, an intermediate cross-bar e2 being also provided for support of the shaft c and other parts, as will be explained.
On the front projecting end of the shaft c a grooved pulley f is secured, which receives an endless cord f,the double parallel strands of which are also engaged and held taut bya similar grooved pulley g at the base of the shaft A, so that a movement of the cord f will cause the dumb-Waiter I3 to ascend or descend the shaft A, as may be required, this being the usual means provided for the reeiprocation of the dumb waiter or elevatorcar B.

The indicating mechanism, which coaots with the hoisting apparatus of the dumb- Waiter B to exhibit at the base of the shaft A the enact position of said dumb-waiter, will now be described. On the intermediate crossbar e2 a standard h is erected, which is located oppositev a bracket-block h on the rear wall of the hollow shaft A, and on the standard and block a short drum-shaft ft' is journaled by its ends, so as to revolve parallel to the shaft c of the elevating mechanism.
A comparatively large grooved pulley z" is secured on the forward end of the drum-shaft t' near the standard h, which pulley is in alignment with a small grooved pulley m on the shaft c of the elevator mechanism, a taut band m', placed on said pulleys, being adapted to transmit motion 'from the shaft c when the dumb-waiteris moved and suitably reduce the speed of the drum-shaft t'. The upper end of a rope or cord n is secured on the shaft c', around which it is designed to be wrapped, and thence to engage a grooved pulley o, which is pivoted upon the rear side of the upper portion of the weighty sliding block o', and thence upwardly to be secured by its other end to the regulator-shaft p, around which said end portion of the rope or cord may be wrapped by revoluble movement of the small handwheelp thereon, secured in aposition convenient for regulation from one of the iioors of the building, which latter are represented by numerals on the side edges of the elevatorshaft A.

of said iioors may also be placed in regular rotation from the lower loor upwardly on the A vertical slotis made in the faceplate r, wherein a stud bearing' an index or pointer r may slide, which stud projects from the heavy slide-block o', and thus by the relative position of the pointer opposite the marks 0n the face-plate r indicates the position of the dumb-waiter or elevator-ear above it.
Should the cord n become slaekened or stretch so as to improperly locate the pointer r', this may be corrected by an adjustment of the regulator-shaft p in an obvious manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with an elevator-car or dumb-waiter, a flexible connection, a counterbalance for the dumb-waiter or elevator-car, and an endless rope which is adapted to move the dumb-waiter or elevator-car reciprocally, of a speed-reducing drum revolubly supported above, a pulley on the drum-shaft iiexibly connected to the reciprocating device of the elevator-car, an indicating-plate below, a weighted slide-'block having an index-pointer, a loose pulley/ thereon, and a flexible connection between this pulley and the speed-reducing drum,and also between the loose pulley and a revoluble regulating-shaft of the indicator mechanism, substantially as set forth.
