Beit known that I, OHARLEs MABEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Collins, in the county of .Larimer'and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to carpet-stretchers, and it has for its object to provide a device 1o which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction and eifective in operation.

The invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and parr 5 ticularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig'. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 41 is a detail view of the sliding head of my improved carpet-stretcher detached from the ratchet-bar.

A designates a ratchet-bar, of suitable length, provided at its front end with a vertical prong B, and provided at its lower edge with laterally-extending anges C C, terminating at a short distance from the rear end of said ratcl1et-bar,where the ends of the said flanges form shoulders D.

The sliding head of my improved carpetstretcher comprises a transverse bar E, provided 4with a series of prongs F on its under u' side, adapted to engage the carpet. vided with longitudinal flanges L between 5o which the flanges C of the said ratchet-bar will be guided. The arms or brackets J J are provided with lugs M, between which are pivoted the ends of the arms N of a bifurcated lever O, the outer end of which is provided 5 5 with a suitable handle. A pawl P is connected pivotally to the under side of the lever O and adapted to engage the ratchet-bar A. The extreme end of said pawl B is provided with lugs Q Q, extending downwardly on 6o either side of the ratchet-bar, in order to hold the said pawl in engagement with the latter and prevent it from being displaced laterally.

To the rear end of the ratchet-bar A, on the sides of the latter, are pivoteda pair of arms R R, between the outer ends of which is mounted a roller S, to admit of the carpets sliding freely under the stretcher when the latter is in operation. It will be noticed that the arms carrying the said roller may be 7o swung rearward to a horizontal position, so as not to interfere with the passage of the bearing-plate K of the sliding head, while at the same time the said arms perform the function of retaining the said sliding head upon the ratchetbar.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. 'The prong at the front end SO of the ratchet-bar is driven into the iioor of the room adjacent to the base-board, the sliding head is then moved in a rearward direction upon the ratchet-bar and its teeth caused to engage with the carpet, which may then be 8 5 stretched by operating the lever O in the usual manner, the pawl I serving to retain the sliding head in the position to which it is adjusted. The roller at the rear end of the device enables the carpet to slide freely under 9o the same without catching against any of its parts.

Having thus described my invention, I claiml. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination of a ratchet-bar having a vertical prong at its front end and provided at its lower edge with laterally-exten'ding flanges, a sliding head the lower ends of which recesses are formedv to admit the flanged ratchet-bar, a pawl pivoted between the upper ends of said lugs, and brackets or arms extending rearward from said cross-bar and connected by a bearing? plate having longitudinal guide-flanges and a bifurcated lever, the ends of the arms of which are connected pivotally to lugs upon the rearwardly-extending arms of the crossbar of the sliding head, and having a pawl pivoted to its under side and engaging the ratchet-bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a carpet-stretcher, the combination ot' a ratchet-bar having a vertical `prong at its front end and provided at its lower` edge with laterally-extending iianges terminating at a short distance from its rear end, the sliding head having a transverse cross-bar provided with downwardly-extending prongs and provided with the pivoted pawl engaging the ratchet-bar, a levell connected pivotally to the sliding head and having a pawl engaging the ratchet-bar and provided with lugs extending downwardly from each side of the latter, the arms connected pivotally to the rear end of the ratchet-bar in rear of the laterally-extending iianges of the latter, and a roller journaled between the outer ends of the said arms, substantially asl and for the purpose herein set forth.
