SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,889, dated April 15, 1890.

Be it known that we, FREDERIO ALFRED SURHURIER nrr LALLEMAND and ARTHUR GRAVEL, citizens of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the city and district of Montreal and Province of Quebec, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashingtion and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the machine from above. Fig. 2is a rear end view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section, taken on line 00 9c in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view of the machine, showing the upper half raised up.

Our invention is composed of the portion A, cut away at B to facilitate the handling, and having its upper surface at O corrugated, as an ordinary wash-board, or provided with small depressions, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or any suitable device. It is also provided with the two legs D D, which serve the same purpose as the legs of an ordinary washboard, and two upright pieces E E, on which is pivoted the two side pieces F F at G G, so that they can revolve around these points for a certain portion of a circumference, the object of which shall be explained hereinafter.

The two side pieces F F are joined together by means of the cross-pieces II and I and have the form shown in the drawings. The piece I is provided with the slot J, through which passes the toothed sector K, provided with the lever L and held in position by means of the shaft M, resting on the standards N, firmly secured on the piece I. This sector K couples on the geared wheel 0, attached to the piece I at P, which communicates an alternating motion to the board Q through the medium of the connecting-rod B. This board Q is corrugated like an ordinary wash-board, or otherwise suitably arranged. To press the board Q down firmly against the piece A,we make use of the springs S S, attached at one on tremity to the piece I and resting at the other on the rollers T, secured to the board Q,which slides in the guides V.

The pieces F F are held down on the piece A by means of the hooks IV. To introduce a piece of material to be Washed between the pieces Q and A, all that is necessary to do is to bring the lever L down until it strikes on the top of the piece a, which is provided with the catch 1) at its lower extremity, thus pushing it downward in such a Way that the moment the lever L begins its upward motion the piece (1 passes onto the catch 1); but the spring f immediately pulls up the piece d, and consequently the board Q, to which it is attached; but during this time, the leverL continuing its upward motion, the board Q has a backward movement that is, from the gear-wheel O-so that the piece d slips onto the support 9 until it reaches its extremity h, where it slips off, and consequently the board Q falls down onto the piece A.- However,before this takes place-that is, while the board Q is suspended on the support g-the lever L being stopped, the material to be washed is introduced on the piece A, where the board Q, on falling and beginning its forward movement,.pulls it along with it and gives it a good rubbing against the piece A in its forward and backward movement. WVhen it is wanted to advance the clothes placed between the boards Q and A, all that is necessary to do is to repeat the operations necessary to raise the board Q and let it drop at the lower end of its course, just described, this bringing the material along with it.

If necessary to raise the whole apparatus off the piece A, all that is necessary to do is to unoouple the hooks IV and raise pieces F up with accompanying mechanism, thewhole revolving on the pivots G, this also allowing the introduction of clothes.

The piece m serves to arrest the downward motion of the lever L.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. Ina washing-m achine, the lever L, toothed sector K, geared wheel 0, connecting-rod R, board Q, springs S, rollers T, piece a, spring f, catch 1), piece (Z, support g, pieces F, H, and

I, also standards N, all arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a washing-machine, the combination,

with the lower wash-board provided with up- 5 rights E, of a frame pivoted to said uprights,

the spring-actuated catch 1) and the support g, both attached to said frame, the upper washboard bear-in g upon the lower wash-board, the piece d, secured to said upper Wash-board, and

I0 a lever for imparting reciprocating motionto the upper wash-board and causing said catch to engage with piece (1 at intervals, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
