SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,660, dated April 15, 1890. Application filed Qatober 24:, 1889. serial No. 328,018- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it ntay concern:
Be. it known that I, CHARLES W. CRAN- NELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oberlin, in the county of Decatur and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to pumps adapted to force great quantities ofwater from wells, cisterns,'and other sources, and is especially adapted for irrigating purposes.
The objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section, of a pump constructed in accordancewith my invention, the same being shown in position in awell. Fig. 3 is a detail of the spiral conveyer.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents an ordinary well or cistern, or, as before stated, it maybe any other source of supply, and in the same is mounted a pump, hereinafter described. At each side of the cistern or well there are located standards 2, upon the upper ends of which are formed bearings 3, in which there is journaled a horizontal power-shaft i, carrying a pulley 5, driven by a belt 6, leading to any suitable motor, and also carrying a balance or fly wheel 7.
8 represents the pump-stock, which extends from above the well down into the same, and upon the lower end of the stock there is threaded an annular air-chamber 9, the diameter of which is considerably greater than the stock, the lower end of the latter extending down and forming an inner wall for the chamber 9, which inner wall is provided with an annular air-discharge opening 10 near the juncture of the upper end of the chamber with the stock.
11 represents a cone-shaped chamber, the lower end of the stock being threaded in the apex of the same, and 12 represents an outer similar chamber likewise at the lower end of the stock, but provided at its upper end with bearings 13, so that it is adapted to be revolved around the inner cone 11. The outer cone 12 is provided with a series of induction-orifices 14, each of which is partially surrounded by an outwardly-extending concave '55 pocket or flange 15, and the inner cone 11 is provided with a number of orifices 16, arranged in a plane with the orifices 11 just mentioned.
17 represents a vertical shaft located in the pump-stock 8 and extending downthrough the two cones 11 and 12, and taking bearings in a block 18, located at the bottom of the water-supply. The inner cylinder is provided with an opening 20, loosely embracing the o 5 shaft 17, and the outer cylinder 12 is provided with a similar opening 21 and with a nut 22, jamming the bottom of the cone upon said shaft, whereby said outer cone is adapted to revolve with the shaft. The upper end of theshaft is journaled in a bearing 23, formed in a cap 24, and is provided above its beare ings with a small pinion 25, which meshes with the master-gear 26, mounted fixedly upon the shaft 4.
27 represents a spiral water-elevator, the spirals or convolutions of the same agreeing in diameter with the bore of the stock 8, and the inner cone lland the lower of the convolutions being provided with a cut-off 28, 8o adapted to successively close the several orifices 15 in the inner cylinder 11.
29 represents a pair of air-pu1nps,the pistons 30 of which are connected at their upper ends and alternately operated by means of cranks 31, formed in the shaft 4 at each side of the master-gear 26. From the lower end of each of the air-pumps 29 there depends an air tube or pipe 32, the lower end of which communicates, as at 33, with diainetrically-opposite 0 points of the air-chamber 9. The upper end of the stock 8 is provided with an eductionspout 34:.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The rod 17, revolving through the medium of the pinion 25, the master-gear 26, and the shaft 4, carries with it the elevator 27 and the outer cone 12, the latter serving to agitate the water in which it is immersed and causing an induction through the orifices 14 and 16, and is caught by the flange 28 and delivered onto the elevator. The pumps 29 are operated by the cranks 31 and serve to force air into the air-chamber 9, and the same is delivered in an annular jet 'througlr the opening into the stock 8, whereby the wa ing in an enlarged perforated cone-shaped.
chamber rigid therewith, of a rotatable pump- .rod passing axially through the stock and chamber and terminating below the latter in a bearing, a water-elevator rigid with the rod and adapted to revolve within the stock and chamber, and an outer perforated cone-shaped casing inclosing the chamber, perforated and rigid with therod, and journaled upon the hearing at the lower end of the stock, substantially as specified.
2. In a pump, the combination of the stock, a revolving cone-shaped chamber perforated and mounted at the lower end thereof, a revolving pump-rod mounted in the stock and rigidly connected with the coneshaped chamber, a spiral water-elevator rigid with the rod, pumps mounted at the side of the stock, an air-chamber mounted near the lower end of the stock and discharging there in, air-tubes leading from the pumps to the chamber, and means for operating the pu mps and rod, substantially as specified.
3.In a pump, the combination, with the stock,a revolving cone-shaped chamber perforated and located at the lower end of the stock, a rotatable pump-rod mounted in the stock and rigidly connected with the coneshaped chamber, and a spiral water-elevator connected with the rod, of an air-chamber encircling the stock above the cone-shaped chamber and ,having an annular opening communicating with the pump-stock,the pair of force-pumps located at the upper end of the stock and pipes connecting the same with the lower ends of the chamber, a crank-shaft, the cranks of which are connected with the pistons of the pumps, a gear mounted on the crank-shaft, and a pinion connected to the pump-rod and meshing with the gear,- and means for rotating the shaft, substantially as specified.
4. In a pump, the combination, with the pump-stock, a rigid cone-shaped chamber secured to the lower end of the stock and provided with perforations, and a revoluble inclosing-chamber provided with perforations aligning with those of the stationary chamber, of a pump-rod mounted in the pump stock, passing through the stationary chamber, and rigidly connected with the revolving chamber, a spiral water-elevator rigid with the rod, an annular air-chamber encircling the stock and communicating therewith at the upper end of the chamber, opposite forcepumps mounted at the side of the pumpstock, and air-pipes connecting the same with the air-chamber, a orank-shaft located above the stocks and having its crank portions connected with thepair of opposite pump-pistons, the master-gear mounted intermediate the cranks, and a smaller pinion located at the upper end of thepump-rod and meshing with the master-gear, a fiy-wheel mounted on the shaft, standards for supporting the shaft,
the belt-pulley mounted on the shaft, and
means for rotating the same, substantially as specified.
5. In a pump, the combination, with the pump-stock, the fixed cone-shaped chamber perforated and rigid with the stock at the lower end of the same, and the revolving outer chamber inclosing the fixed chamber and provided with perforations registering with those of the same and having outwardly-extending concave pockets, of the pump-rod mounted in the stock, passing through the rigid chamber, and rigidly connected with the outer chamber and stepped in a bearingblock located below the same, an annular airchamber encircling the lower end of the pump-stock and provided with an annular discharge-opening communicating with the pump-stock at the upperend of the pumpchamber, a pair of force-pumps located at opposite sides of the stock, an air-pipe connecting the pumps with the lower end of the chamber, a power-shaft located above the stock and provided with cranks, pistons mounted in the air-pumps, having their rods connecting the cranks, means for rotating the shaft, a gear mounted on the shaft and operating the pump-rod, and the spiral water-elevator mounted on the rod and provided at its lower end with a flange adapted to succes- IIO stock, a revolving cone-shaped chamber perforated and located at the lower end of the stock, a rotatable pump-rod mounted in the stock and rigidly connected with the coneshaped chamber, and a spiral water-elevator connected with the rod, of an air-chamber encirclingthe stock above the cone-shaped chamher and having an annular opening communicating with the pump-stock, the pair of force-pumps located at the upper end of the stock and pipes connecting the same withthe lower ends of the chamber, and a crank-shaft, the cranks of which are connected with the pistons of the pumps, substantially as specified. In -a pump, the combination, with the pump-stock, a rigid cone-shaped chamber secured to the lower end of the stock and provided with perforations, and a revoluble in closing-chamber provided with perforations aligning with those of the stationary chamber, of a pump-rod mounted in the pump-stock, passing through the stationary chamber, and rigidly connected with the revolving chamber,

lower end of the same, and revolving outer chamber inclosing the fixed chamber and provided with perforations registering with those of the same and having outwardly-extending concave pockets, of the pump-rod mounted in the stock, passing through the rigid chamber, and rigidly connected with the outer chamber, an annular air-chamber encircling the lower end of the pump-stock and provided with an annular discharge opening communicating with the pump-stock at the upper end of the pump-chamber, and the spiral water-elevator mounted on the rod and provided at its lower end with a flange adapted to successively cut off the induction-openings in the inner rigid chamber, substantially as specified.
