Description

(No Model.)
'0. McDOWELL. END GATE No. 425,620. Patented Aprl 15, 1890.
.vliiorney- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLIVER MCDOWELL, OF HARLAN, IOWA.
END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,620, dated April 15, 1890. Application filed Pehruary fi, 1890. Serial No. 339,404. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER MCDOWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harlan, in the county of Shelby and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to novel-improvements in end-gates; and it consists in the novel construction and arrange mentofj ointed arms, in combination with an end-gate of a vehicle, all as will be hereinafter fully eX- plained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side view, part sectional, of my device. of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the jointed arms, and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a wagon-body of any.
well-known construction, and B represents the end-gate, having side strips a a, and slots 1) Z), as well as a plate 0, which engages the slot d in the bed of the body and assists in holding the gate in place when being raised or lowered. The holding-arms consist of two sections 6 and f, which are pivoted to a stud gv on each side of the wagon-body. The section 6 consists of a straight arm. having at one end an eye 71, which engages said stud, while the opposite end is pivoted to the section f at i, and the same is cut away at j, providing shoulder or tooth k, which engages the endgate when said gate is closed and holds the same in a closed position. Beyond the pivoted portion 1' the extreme inner end of the Fig. 2 is a rear viewsection f is enlarged, and is provided with an offset or shoulder Z, which serves as a stop for the other section, and said section f is provided with a curved end m, having a knob or handle 01, which, when the gate is lowered, forms a stop for the same by engaging the sides of the slots in said gate. It will thus be seen that when the gate is up or closed the hook or shouldered end of the section 6 engages the edge of the slot in said gate at the same time the section f hangs in avertical position and the enlarged portion or point 0 engages the roof of said slot and prevents the hook from accidental displacement and provides a lock therefor.
When it is desired to lower the gate, the
section fis raised to a horizontal position, the lug or offset engaging the other section and at same time raising both sections, thus disengaging the hook from the gate, when the latter can be readily lowered and held in such position by the knob or handle on the curved outer end of said section f; and an end-gate as herein described is simple in operation,
durable, and cheap to manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s*
The combination, with the body and end-gate provided with slotted bearings, of the sections or jointed arms, the section e having the eye -to engage the stud on the wagon-body, and
hooked end pivoted at i to the section f, the latter having curved outer end provided with the knob or handle, an oitset or lug, and an enlarged point, all and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER MCDOlVELL. Witnesses:
J. V. BRAZIE, J OSEPH STILES.
