UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN BADGER, CF VATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
POCKET-SOISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,560, dated April 15, 1890.
I Application filed August 23, 1889. Serial No. 321,732. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J @NATHAN BADGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of YVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pocket-Scissors, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to the construction of scissors with a view to permit of reversing the position of the blades for convenience of carrying the scissors in the pocket; and it consists of cert-ain novel devices for retaining the scissors-blades in reversed positions, as hereinafter more particularly described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichm Figure I represents a side view with the scissors-blades in normal position. Fig. II represents a like view with the blades in reversed position. Fig. III represents an edge view of the reversed blades.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts. Y
The letters A B indicate the two scissorsblades, formed with the usual arms or handles A B', and C indicates the pivot connecting the blades together. The blades A B, together with their arms A l, lie in different planes, and the contiguous faces of said parts are flat, they being preferably made of sheet metal, so that the blades are adapted to be brought from a normal position, as shown in Fig. I, to a reversed position, with the ends or bows of the blades at the opposite extremities of the scissors, as shown in Fig. II, thereby aiording a protection to the pocket in which the scissors may be carried against contact with the poin ts of the blades.
Upon the arm A of the blade A are arranged two stops CZ e, one fixed and the other movable, for engaging the point of the blade B when the blades are reversed, and thereby retaining the blades in reversed position. Both of these stops d e are made in shape of a stud or button, and the movable stop e is iitted in a slot f of the proper arm, arranged in such relation to the fixed stop d as to per- `mit the movable stop to be adjusted toward `movable stop e, the stud of which it is composed may be doubled, one part thereof being arranged on each side of the blade-arm A as shown in Fig. III.
On the point of the blade A and integral therewith is formed a hook G, of a suitable shape to act as a glove-buttoner or shoe-buttoner, and on the back of the blade B is a row of serrations I, forming integral therewith an abrading-surfaoe or Iile, which may be conveniently used for trimming or polishing the finger-nails:
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Pocketscissors having reversible blades and arms combined with stops, one fixed and the other movable, which are arranged on the arm of one blade to engage the point of the other blade, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Pocket-scissors having reversible blades and arms, one having a slot f, combined with stops d e, one fixed to the slotted arm and the other fitted in the slot thereof to move toward and from said iixed stop, substantially as and Jfor the purpose described.
Signed at lWaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, this 2d day 'of May, A. D. 1889.
