COMBINED FLOUR BIN AND SIFTER.
No. 425,334. Patented Apr. 8, 1890.

I UNITED STATES PATENT union.
GEORGE A. MAR-KHAM, OF COLDIVATER, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED FLOUR BIN AND SIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,334, dated April 8, 1890. Application filed January 31, 1890. Serial No. 338,797. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. MARKHAM, of Goldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Flour Bins and Sifters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined flour and meal bins and sifters, and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully de scribed hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to produce a combined flour bin and sifter in which the operating parts are all supported in or upon a metallic frame of the construction hereinafter described, which is secured in the lower part of the bin.
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical section of an implement which embodies my invention complete.
A represents the bin, which may be of any desired shape, size, or construction that may be preferred, and which is provided with a loop, hook, or other device 13 upon one .side, so as to suspend it upon the wall or any other suitable support. The lower end of this bin is contracted in size, as shown, and the sifting mechanism is located in this lower end. Rigidly secured inside of the lower end of the bin A is a metallic casting or frame O,
which extends entirely across the bin and is provided with the downwardly-extended portions D, which are provided with horizontal bearings, and the tubular bearing G, which extends vertically, as shown. The portions D are secured by rivets or otherwise to the bin A. Extending horizontally through these bearings is the cranked shaft 0, which has the beveled wheel I-I secured to it, and which wheel meshes with the beveled wheel I, which is secured to the lower end of the vertical shaft J, which projects any suitable distance up into the bin, and to the upper end of which the stirrer L, of any suitable construction, is fastened. 'lvhen the shaft 0 is revolved by its handle or crank, the shaft J is also caused to revolve and the stirrer L prevents the flour from clogging in the bin. This shaft J projects through the bearing G, and has the brush P rigidly secured thereto, so that the brush is caused to revolve over the top of the screen Q, which is placed loosely in the lower portion of the bin and above the top of the casting G. The shaft J is held in an upright position by means of the tubular bearing G, so that it can have none other than a rotary movement. The rotary movement imparted to the brush causes it to force the flour through the screen Q, and it then falls through the lower end of the bin A into the receptacle prepared to receive it.
All of the parts of this bin are made removable, with the exception of the casting O, and this can be made removable if so desired. i
\Vhen the bin is not in use, its lower end will be covered by means of a cap, so as to keep dust and insects from getting into the flour or meal.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a combined flour bin and sifter, the combination, with the bin, of the casting C, which is placed in its lower end and provided with the two horizontal bearings at its ends, and the tubular bearing G at its center, the horizontal operating shaft, the vertical stirrer-shaft, and intermeshing gears secured to each, the casting being made to form a support for the operating parts of the sifter, substantially as shown.
2. In a combined flour bin and sifter, the combination of the bin, the casting 0, provided with the bearings at its ends, and the tubular hearing or journal G at its center, the horizontal shaft 0, the gear-wheels II I, the vertical shaft J, the stirrer L, secured to the upper end'of the shaft, the brush secured to the shaft J, and the screen Q, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my s gnature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. MARK HAM.
