Be it known that I, JAMES M. CREW s, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Scraper, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cotton-Scrapers; and it has for its object to construct a device of this class which shall be simple and inexpensive, durable, and efficient in operation, and which may be readily adjusted or regulated so as to work in ridges or beds of any width.

The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and. combination of parts, which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cottonscraper. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line a: of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line y y in Fig. 2.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.

1 designates a beam, which is of the construction of an ordinary plow-beam and which is provided with handles 2 2, which are connected with the rear end of said beam by means of inclined braces 3 3.

4 designates an iron plate having forwardlyconverging side edges 5 5. This plate is secured to the under side of the plow-beam 1 by means of bolts 6 6, the front one of which is located to the left of a central longitudinal line, while the rear bolt is located to the right of such a line, thus placing the beam in a laterally-inclined position, which enables the team to walk on the left side'of the row of plants which is being operated upon. Near the edges of the plate 4,-at the front and rear `ends of the same, are formed longitudinal front end of the blade 11 is extended some distance in front of the blade 12. The front edges of the blades are slightly curved outwardly, as shown at 13, and the lower edges of the blade are likewise curved outwardly, as shown at 14, for the purpose of throwing the dirt outwardly from the plants. The blades 11 and 12 are connected near their front e'nds by a transverse bolt 15, upon whichis coiled a spring 1G, by means of which the said blades are spaced apart. The rear straps 10 are connected by a coiled spring 17, inclosing an iron rod 18,which is to so adjust the blades or scrapers that they will adapt themselves to any size bed or ridge upon which the cotton is planted.

From the foregoing description, taken 1n connection with the drawings hereto anneXed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.

The draft is attached to the front end of the beam and the machine is dragged over the field, straddling the rows of plants and stirring and scraping the soil in the usual wellknown manner.

The construction of the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive, and it may be operated very easily and with most satisfactory results.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by .Letters Patent- 1. In a cotton-scraper, the combination of a beam, a plate secured horizontally to the under side of said beam and having longitudinal slots near its edges, the straps hinged in the said slots, and the blades or Scrapers secured to the lower ends of said straps, substantially as setforth.

2. In a cotton-scraper, the combination of a beam, a plate secured horizontally to the under side of said beam and having forwardlyconverging side edges and slots near the front and rear ends of the said edges, the straps hinged in the said edges, the blades or scrapers secured to the lower ends of said straps, the adjusting-bolt connecting the front ends of said blades or Scrapers, and a spacingspring coiled upon the said bolt, substantially as set forth.

3. In a cotton-scraper, the combination of a horizontal plate having forwardly-converging side edges and longitudinal slots near the IOO front and rear ends of said edges, a beam se eured upon the upper side of said plate in a laterally-inclined position, the straps hinged in the slots of said plate, the blades or serapers secured to the lower ends oi' said straps, the transverse bolt connecting the front ends of said blades and having a coiled spacingspring, a eoiled spring connecting` the rear hinge-straps, and a spacing-rod inelosed by said spring, substantially as set forth.
