LEVIS BRODSKY AND SAMUEL A. OTT, OF PLOVER, IOVA.
WAGON END-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,171, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed January 27, 1890. Serial No. 838,187. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
' Be it known that we, LEWIS BRODSKY and SAMUEL A. OTT, of Plover, in the county of Pocahontas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved End-Gate for Wagon- Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to improvements in end-gates for wagon-boxes; and the object of our invention is to provide an endgate that can be quickly inserted in or removed from the wagon-box, that may be easily and securely fastened therein, and `in which the fastening device cannot work loose or easily get out of repair.
To this end our invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, that will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure lis a front elevation of an end-gate embodying our invention attached to a wagonbox; Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the same on the line @o o@ of Fig. l; and Fig. 3, a front elevation of the gate, but with the main gearplate removed.
The end-gate A is placed in the end of the wagon-box B against the shoulders a upon the inner sides of the wagon-box, is provided at each end with vertical cleats C, and is provided in the center with a broad vertical cleat D and at each lower corner with a pin b, which passes through a hole in the wagon-bottom and prevents the bottom of the end-gate from being crowded out of place. The cleats C and D are attached to the outside of the gate Aby suitable screws or nails, and the cleat D is provided with a circular recess E, to receive the disk F, and with other recesses d, upon opposite sides of the recess E, to receive the gearwheels e. The gear-wheels care attached to the ends of threaded bolts f, which pass outwardly through the opposite edges of the cleat D, where they are supported by staples f which are driven into the end-gate A at each side of the cleat D and through the cleats C and the side of the wagon-boX B. The inner edge of the cleats C and the outside of the wagon-body are provided with plates 71, and h, which are rmly attached thereto, said plates being perforated and provided with a screw-thread to fit the thread of the bolts f, which pass through the plates, so that when the gear-wheels e and bolts f are turned in one direction they will be screwed into the plates and so through the cleats C and wagonbox B, and when they are turned in the opposite direction the bolts will be withdrawn.
Within the recess E upon the central portion c' the hnbj of a disk Fbears, the disk fitting in said recess and being secured therein by a screw or bolt 7c, which passes through the hub j of the disk and into the portion fr', and upon which the disk may be turned. The outer face of the disk F is provided with a handle Z, by which it may be turned, and around its inner rim are gear-teeth on, which mesh with the gear-wheels e and actuate the same. The recesses d should be wide enough for the gear-wheels e to move therein far enough for the bolts f to be withdrawn from the sides of the wagon-box B, and the faces of the gearwheels e should be wide enough to continue to mesh with the teeth m of the disk F as they are drawn into the recesses d.
To operate the device, the end-gate A is placed in the Wagon-box B with its inner face against the shoulders a and the pins b pro jecting through the holes in the bottom of the wagon-box. Y The disk F is then turned by means of the handle Z, the teeth m upon the inner rim of the disk will mesh with the gearwheels c and turn them, the gear-wheels will turn the bolts f, which will be drawn ontwardly by the thread in the plates 7L until the bolts enter the plates 7L upon the outside of the wagon-box, where they will be engaged by the thread in the plate 7L', and thus the bolts f and the end-gates A, to which they are attached, will be firmly fastened into the wagon-box. To remove the end-gate A, the disk F is turned in the opposite direction and the bolts f, acting in the plates 71 will be withdrawn from the wagon-box B, and the gate may be lifted out.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isum 1. An endgate for wagon-boxes having threaded bolts journaled on its outer face, said bolts-operating through threaded plates vnear the outer edges of the end-gate so as to engage the sides of the Wagon, gear-Wheels attached to the inner ends of said bolts, and a rotatable disk centrally pivoted upon said end-gate having teeth around its inner rim adapted to mesh With and turn said gear- Wheels, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with an end-gate and plates attached thereto having a threaded hole, of threaded bolts journaled on the endgate engaging the threaded plates and adapted to be projected beyond the ends of the gate, gear-Wheels on said bolts, and a gear-Wheel pivoted on the gate to engage the bolt-gears, substantially as shownand described.
3. In an end-gate for Wagon-boxes, the conibination, with the gate A, having recesses E and d, gear-Wheels e, mounted in the recesses d, and bolts f, attached to said gear-Wheels and adapted to engage with the sides of the Wagon-box, of the disk F, pivoted in the recess E and having teeth upon its inner rim to engage and turn the gear-Wheels e, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the end-gate A and wagon-box B, having plates h and h with threaded perforations therein iirmly attached thereto, of the threaded bolts f, adapted to turn in said threaded plates and having means, as gear-Wheels e and toothed disk F,
for actuating the same, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with the Wagon-box B, having perforated thread ed plates h upon its outer sides, of the end-gate A, having recesses E and d, threaded plates h, arranged near the ends of the gate opposite said plates h', the bolts f, adapt-ed to engage said plates, the gear-Wheels e, attached to the inner ends of said bolts and adapted to move and turn in the recesses d, and the toothed disk F, adapted to turn in the recess E and actuate the gear- Wheels c and bolts f, all substantially as described.
G. An end-gate for Wagon-boxes, consisting, essentially, of a gate A, having a circular recess E in the face thereof, With other recesses d Within said circular recess, and having plates h attached near its ends, the gear- Wheels e Within the recesses d, the threaded bolts f, attached to said gear-Wheels, adapted to turn on the gate and to engage the plates 7L, and the disk F, pivoted in said circular recess, having a suitable handle Z, by which it may be turned, and teeth m, to mesh With and turn the gear-Wheels e, all substantially as described.
