, D'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK K. HUGHES, or wILKEs-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM J. PARMELEE, or SAME PLACE.
AXLE
sPEcIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,943, dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed June 4, 1889. Serial No. 313,059. (N model.)
To aZZ whom it Weary concern:
Be 1t known that I, PATRICK K. HUGHES,
a citizen of the United States, residing at;
any accidental separation, and also to pre-' vent so far as possible dust and grit from entering between the sleeve and spindlein other words, to provide a close-fitting device to be applied to the end of the spindle and yet maintain a freedom of action of the sleeve upon the axle-spindle.
With these general objects in view the instruction hereinafter specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a per-.
spective of a portion of an axle the spindle of which is providedwith a sleeve maintained in position thereon by devices constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of the binding and looking nut-s, respectively. Fig. 5 is a detail view representing the end of the axle-spindle.
Like numerals. of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the axle, at the ends of which are formed the usual spindles or bearings 2, and at the juncture of the axle and spindle are provided in this instance the annularlygrooved cylindrical boss 3 and the shoulder 4. The outer end of the spindle is reduced and screw-threaded, as at 5, the threads being disposed from right to left. Toward the extremity of the spindle a further reduction is made, as at 6, and said reduced portion is screw-threaded, the threads being disposed from left to right.
7 represents the sleeve or axle-box, which is designed to be fitted within the hub of the wheel, and the same in this instance consists of an enlarged rear end 8, having an enlarged bore 9 agreeing in size with and adapted to loosely fit the annularly-grooved boss 3 and of a depth to extend slightlyfin front of the shoulder 4, thus forming an annular recess 10, in which is located a leather washer 11, embraced upon the one side by the shoulder 4 and upon the opposite side by the end wall of the recess 10. Forward of the recessedportion 10 the sleeve is reduced, as is also its bore 12, the same loosely fitting the spindle 2, said sleeve terminating at a point slightly beyond the beginning of the reduced portion 5 and provided with an annution 17 of the binding-nut abuts. lhe nut in rear of the cylindrical portion 17 is angularly formed to adapt the same for a wrench, and is interiorly recessed, as at 19, for a purpose hereinafter specified, said recess terminating at the shoulder 20, formed at the beginning or front end of the reduced portion 17. By the proper proportioning of the recess 13 and the exterior of the reduced portion 17 a ground joint 17* is formed, which, in addition to the leather washer 14, mounted in the recess, makes the possibility of dust or grit entering between the sleeve and spindle extremely remote.
21 represents the outer cap or what I herein term the locking-nut, andthe same consists of a hollow cap portion 22, of a length sufficient to extend beyond the juncture of the nut and the sleeve and of a size interiorly sufficient to wholly receive the bindingnut 15. Thecap is provided at its exterior forward end with a wrench-receiving surface 23 and an exterior annular boss 24 intermediate its ends, adapted to be received by and approximately fit the outer hub-band of a wheel. The cap within its bore 25 is provided with a rearwardly internally-bored and screw-threaded collar 26, the bore and thread of which are adapted to coact with the reduced spindle portion 6, and by this means said cap acts as a lock-nut for the binding-nut 15, the threads of the two, like those on the portions 5 and 6, being oppositely disposed.
The exterior surface of the collar 26 is of a size adapted to snugly fit the inner wall of the annular recess 19, formed in the nut 15, thus forming a second ground joint 27.
By the construction described it will be apparent that while the sleeve or axle-box will be perfectly at liberty to revolve upon the spindle it will without binding against metal be snugly held upon its proper bearing, and, furthermore, that by the arrangement described dust, grit, and water will be prevented from entering between any of. the parts composing the device.
Having described my intention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with the spindle 2, terminating in the reduced portions 5 and 6, oppositely screw-threaded, of the sleeve or axlebox '7, projecting slightly beyond the beginning of the reduced portion and terminating in the annular groove 13, having the washer 14, the binding-nut 15, threaded on the portion 5 and having a reduced rear portion forming a ground joint with the recess 13, and having a forward annular recess-19, and of the lock-nut 21, having the internal bore provided with the interiorly-threaded integral collar 26, mounted on the reduced portion 6, the exterior of said collar taking within the annular recess 19 of the nut 15 and forming a ground joint with the wall of the same, said lock-nut having the hollow cap portion 22, which is of a length sufficient to wholly re ceive the nut 15 and fit around the end of the axle-box, substantially as specified.
2. The spindle having the oppositely-th readed portions 5 and 6 at the outer end, combined with the nut 15, screwing over the threaded portion 5, and the cap or set-nut 21,screwing upon the threaded portion 6 and inclosing the nut 15 and the end of the axle-box, as set forth.
3. The spindle having theoppositely-threaded portions 5 and 6 at the outer end and the axle-box on the spindle, combined with the nut 15, screwing over the portion 5 and forming a ground joint with the interior surface of the outer end of the axle-box, and the cap or set-nut 21, having the threaded collar 26, screwing upon the portion 6 of the spindle and inclosing both the nut 15 and the end of the axle-box, as set forth.
4. The spindle having the threaded portion 6, combined with the cap-nut 21, having an interior screw-threaded collar 26 to engage with the threaded portion 6 of the spindle, said cap-nut being extended forward and inclosing the end of the axle-box, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK K. HUGHES.
