MEASURING-ROD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,930, 'dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed January 30, 1889. Serial No. 298,093. (No model.) Patented in Canada. December 17, 1888, No. 30,420.
measuring-rods; and it consists in certainnovel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an elevation ofmy complete device eXtended. Fig. 2 is an edge View of the same. Figs. 3 and et are views of `the device folded, taken at right angles to each other. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the arm designed for use in measuring horses.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the measuring-rod, consisting of the central or main section B and the end sections O D. The central section B is provided with the longitudinal slots E, and has at its center the trammel-point F, which is secured permanently in the said section in any de; sired manner. The end sections O D are provided with longitudinal slots G, through which pass the bolts H, which are permanently secured in the ends of the central section B, and are provided on their extremities with the thumb-nuts and washers I J, which are adapted to bind against the sides of the end sections, so as to clamp the same to the central section at any desired point.
K designates screws or bolts, which are inserted through the slots E of the central section, and are secured permanently in the ends of the end sections. These bolts aid in guiding the end sections in their movements on the main section and holding the sections together.
L designates an arm, which is provided at one end with a bracket M, having doWel-pins N engaging the longitudinal slots G of the end section C, so as to guide the said bracket and arm when being adjusted upon the end section in adjusting the device. This bracket also carries a bolt O, which passes through the slot of the end section and islprovided with a thumb-nut P, which is adapted to be turned home against the end section, so as to secure the said arm and bracket at the desired point. The bracket and the arm L can be readily removed when not in use, so that the device will occupy but little room. The bracket is provided onv one side with a plummet Q, so as to indicate when the said arm is level.
The several sections of the measuring-bar are provided or marked with the scale of lineal measure, so that the length or other dimension of the object being measured can be readily seen. The end section D is also provided in its end with a trammel marker or pencil, so that by reason of the said marker and thetrammel-point F the device may be used to describe circles. My device is intended for use in measuring heights of objects or in measuring Widths of door and Window openings and similar purposes, and the desired measurement is ascertained by adjusting the several sections upon each other until the entire length of the rod is equal to the dimension desired, when the thumb-nuts are tightened, so as to hold the sections together until the measurement can be noted, which is done by reading the scale marked on the sections, as will be readilyunderstood.
The arm L is intended more-especially for use invmeasuring horses, and in use the end section carrying the said arm is adjusted so as to bring the said arm upon the back of the horse, and when the plummetdndicates that the said arm is level the sections are secured together and the height of the horse Will be indicated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A measuring-rod comprising the sections B C D, the central section B having the longitudinal slots E, and the end sections C D having the longitudinal slots G, the bolts H,
secured in the ends of section B and passing and the bolts K, inserted through the slot-s E roo in the central section B and into the inner ends of the sections C D, as set forth.
2. The combination of the central section B, the end sections C D, secured thereto and longitudinally adjustable thereon, and the arm L, secured to and projecting laterally from the section C and adjustable along the same, as set forth.
3. The combination of the central section B, the end sections C D, having the longitudinal slots G and adjustably secured to the central section, and the arm L, adj ustably secured to the section C and provided with a bracket M, having pins N, engaging the slot G, as set forth.
4. The combination of the central section,
. the end sections adjustably secured thereto, the arm L, having' a bracket at one end ad- Y WILLIAM DRISCOLL. 'Witnesses EDMUND F. BURRITT, D. J. IIURLEAN.
