clear, and exact description of the same, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings. The object of the invention is to enable the coupling and uncouplin g of cars provided with the ordinary links and pins to be done from the sides or top of the cars. v
The invention, generally stated, consists in a quadrantal frame pivoted to the end of the car and connected by a chain to the couplingpin and provided with levers operated-.from the sides or top of the car to raise the'pin out of the link or insert it. Y
The invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents an end view of a car provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing the pin in position in the draw-head. Fig. 3 shows the same, the pin being withdrawn from the link. Figs. 4 and 5 are details of' the quadrantal frame; and Figs. 6 to 9 are modifications thereof, to be hereinafter fully explained. y

D is a rod held in horizontal position on the end of the car by staples a, that permit the rod to turn, and also allow it slight play toward and from the car. The middle portion d of the rod is bent into quadrantal shape,
i and to its outer curved sideis attacheda relatively wide sheet-metal plate e by bending on the rod the tongues e formed in the plate at opposite sides of its median line. An eye d is formed at the outer angle of the frame by a loop in the rod D, and to this eye is attached a chain f, carrying on its lower end an angleiron frame g. The horizontal portion of the frame g has an opening suitable for engaging the head of a coupling-pin C. The pin is introduced through this opening into the drawhead and link. The ends of the rod D are bent at the sides of the ear at right angles to form cranks D2, by means of which the rod can be given a partial rotation, and a liftinglever 71, having a handle h at the top of thek car, is connected at its lower end to an arm probe formed by bending the rod itself, as shown.'
The arrangement of the several parts should be such that when either of the cranks D2 or the lever h is operated to partially rotate the rod D the quadrantal frame d will be given a quarter-turn, and in its upward rotation will constantly draw the chain f in vertical direction by reason of the contact of the chain with the curved surface of the plate e, and so that when the limit of movement has been reached the pin C will have been freed from the link, but have its point still within the upper portion of the draw-head. Thus a coupling can be made by operating alever at the top or side. of the carto lift the coupling-pin and holdit in position to descend by gravity into the link when the latter has entered the draw-head and the operator releases the lever.
In the modified construction illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 the sheet-metal plate e is dispensed with and a sufiiciently broad contactsurface aiforded on the quadrantal frame for the chain f by bending the middle portion of the rod D into zigzags d2, and also suitably bending this portion to form a quadrantr shapedframe.
