UNTTED STATES PATENT Trice.
JAMES M. CUNNINGHAM, OF IEWISBURG, VEST VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. ESTILL, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 411,953, dated October 1, 1889.
Application filed September 26, 1888- Serial No. 286,463 (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, JAMES M. CUNNINGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewisburg, in the county of Greenbrier and State of lVest -lirginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Bits, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in adjustable bits to be used with mortising-m achines and adapted to cut tenons of different sizes; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter' described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a bit embodying theinvention, which bit is made in two sections. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the smaller section of the bit. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the bit.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the larger section of the bit provided with the leg B,having a beveled cutting-edge b at its end. The said section has the body O and the neck e for insertion in the chiselrod of any mortising-machine, the body having a straight lower edge c', that stands at right angles to the leg B.
D is the second or smaller section of the bit, composed of a leg E, similar to the leg ll, and having a similar beveled cutting-edge e, and the two parallel arms F G, standing at right angles to the leg, the arm F extending from the upper end of the leg and the arm G from a point a suitable distance below the former. The said armsF Gr are respectively provided with the longitudinal slots j' g, and move in the grooves Il and I in the leg ll, the former of which is adjacent to the straight edge e and the latter below it.
h and i are threaded openings in the grooves II and I, and .l and K are set-screws passing through the slots f and y and engaging said openings. By means of said slots and screws the legs D and E, which have their cuttingedges aligned, can be moved nearer together or farther apart to eut tenons of different widths.
The meeting edges of the body C and arm F are preferably rabbetcd at Il, where they are fitted together.
The operation of the bit is obvious, as-it may be used with any style of inortising-machine, and will cut tenons of any desired length or width.
Having described my invention, I claiml. The combination, with the section A, having the leg B and provided with the grooves H and I, of the section D, having the leg E, provided with the slotted arms F and G, and the set-screws J and K, substantially as described.
2. In abit, the combination, with the section A, having the leg B, provided with the bevel cutting-edge l), the body C, the neck o, and the slots Il and I, of the section D, having the leg E, provided with the euttingfedge e and the slots f and g in its arms F and G, and the set-screws J and ITI, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed niysignaturein presence of two witnesses.
J AS. ill. CUNNINGHAM.
