BLAST-H EATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,618, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed March l2, 1889. Serial No. 303,023. (No model.)
To au whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN SCANLON, of Ironton, in the county of Charlevoix and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Blast-Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide for the utilization of exhaust and blow-oit steam for the purpose of heating blasts that are to be delivered to furnaces; and to the end named the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilioation, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure l is a side view of my improved blast-l1eater,the heater proper being shown in central vertical section; and Fig. 2 is a plan View of the apparatus, the heater in this case being shown in section.
In the drawings, 10 represents a structure, preferably cylindrical, which is divided into the compartments A,B, and C, the compartments A and B being connected by tubes l1, which run through the compartment C. A large pipe l2 is connected to the structurelO so as to communicate with the upper portion of the chamber C, this pipe being arranged for connection with any ordinary forni of blast-fan, a second pipe 13 being placed in communication with the lower port-ion of the chamber C, said pipe leading to the furnace. Exhaust-steam from the several engines used about the place is delivered to the chamber A through pipes 14, that are arranged in any desired mannen-for instance, as shown in the drawings-while blow-oit steam from the boilers is delivered to the chamber A through pipes 15. The steam so delivered passes up through the tubes l1 and escapes through the nozzle i), which leads from the chamber B.
In order that the water or" condensation may be collected, I provide a tank 1G, that is connected withthe chamber A by a pipe 17, and from the tank I6 the water is pumped in such quantities into the boilers as may be required; but in order that the water may be heated before being delivered to the boilers I provide a drum 20,in which the. steam from an engine in close proximity to the structure IO-such, for instance, as the engine employed to drive the fan-exhausts through a pipe 2l, all such steam after passing through the drum being delivered to the compartment A through a pipe 22. of which is indicated by dotted lines, leads from the tank to a coil-pipe 25, arranged Within the drum 20, such coil-pipe being in turn connect ed with the pump by means of a pipe 24.
By means of such an apparatus as the one above described the blast delivered to the furnace is heated without any additional eX- penditure for fuel, and consequently a material savihg of fuel is brought about.
Although I have described a specific construction and arrangement of apparatus for heating blasts, I desire it to be distinctly understood that any apparatus whereby exhauststeam is utilized for heating the blast would be Within the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the structure lO, divided as described, of tubes Il, arranged within said structure, pipes l2, I3, 14:, and 15, leading to the structure, a tank 16, connections between the tank and the structure, a drum 20, a coil-pipe arranged within the drum, connections between said coil-pipe and the Tank, a pipe connected with the coil-pipe and arranged for connection with a pump, an exhaust-steam pipe connected to the drum, and a pipe connecting the drum and the structure, substantially as described.
