Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS NORTON, OF FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
PlCKER-CHECK FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,556, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed June 8, 1839. Serial No. 313,619. (No modeL) T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS NORTON, of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'Pieker- Checks for Looms, of which the following a specifica tion.
This invention consists of means whereby the motion of the picker-staff is checked at the finish.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of portions of the lay or batten and picker-stat? of a loom sufficient to illustrate the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the under side of the lay, (or lathe,) the picker-staff being shown in horizontal section, Fig. 3 is a cross vertical section on line as, Fig. 2.
A is the lay or batten, and B is the pickerstaff. The lay is provided at its end on the outer surface with the metallic strengtheni ngstrap O, and within with the leather buffer D, as shown.
E is a bolt extending vertically through the lay and provided with a nut 6, whereby the check-lever II is pivotally secured to the under side of said lay or batten.
I is a spring, one end of which is secured to a block J, rigidly attached to the lay, and
the other end of which bears against the rear or inner portion of the check-lever H, causing its outer end to project normally inward. As the picker-staff approaches, it strikes first this check-lever, which yields by thrusting back the spring, but retards the motion of the picker-staff, which strikes the buffer D with comparatively little force. The position of the parts before the check-lever H is struck is shown bybroken lines in Fig. 2, and their position afterward is shown by full lines in the same figure.
By the above means the use of the long leather check-strap, which soon became worn out by the violent blows upon it, is done away with.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a loom, the combination of the lay or batten A, provided with the metallic strap 0 and buffer D, the check-lever II, pivotally secured to the under side of said lay, spring I, one end of which bears against said checklever, and the picker-staii B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
