D. J. MARTIN.
HAMB ATTACHMENT.
No. 410,909. Patented Sept. 10, 1889.
yUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID J. MARTIN, OF OOIINGTON, OHIO.
HAME ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,909, datedepternber 10, 1889. Application lcd March 9, 1889. Serial No. 302,618. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID J. MARTIN, of Covington, in the county of'Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Haine Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forni part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a side view of my improved hame-hook-attaching device secured to a hame. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same detached, showing the hook in disengaging position by the aid of dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse sectional view of the same. Figs. 4. and 5 are side views of the hook and plate separated.
This invention is an improvementin harness; and its obj ect is to provide an improved device for detachably connecting the tughook to the haine; and it consists in the hereinaftendescribed novel construction and arrangement of parts, and is concisely specied in the claims.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a hame of ordinary construction. B is a metal plate secured to said hame in proper position by the aid of screws or rivets, and O is a vertical shoulder or recess in the outer face of said plate.
D D are forwardly-extending curved lugs extending laterally fromthe plate at top and bottom sides thereof and over the ends of shoulder O, as shown. The recesses between the lugs and the body of the plate are rounded and enlarged, as shown at c, the diameter of these recesses being greater than the distance between the ends of the lugs and face of the plate. The portion of the plate in front of shoulder C and between lugs D D is depressed or recessed, as at E.
F designates a hook of any suitable construction, but having oppositely-proj-ectiug short studs G G at its front end, which ymay be formed with or secured to the hook as is convenient. The studs G are of a diameter equal to the diameter of recesses c, but are attened on one side, as at g. The shank of the hook is of a width to lie easily between lugs D D.
In operation the plate B is secured to the haine with the lugs D projecting forward, as shown. The tug-hook F is engaged with the plate by holding it in the position indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2, and drawing it backward causes studs G G to engage lugs D D, and the reduced faces of the studs permit them to slip between the studs and plate into recesses c. Then by turning the hook `backward to Working position, as indicated in full lines, the studs G are turned so that they cannot escape Jfrom the lugs. The tughook is supported upon the lower lug D, and is kept from vertical play between the lugs, while the enlarged cylindrical portion f of the shank of the hook rests against shoulder O and can relieve the lugs of part ot' the draftstrain.
The depressed portion E of the plate permits the ready engagement of the hook and plate by allowing the passage of portion f of the hook-shank in engaging or disengaging the hook and plate.
I thus provide a simple easily-operated hook attaching or detaching device, and the hook cannot become detached from the plate, except in the one postion, and then its shank must be moved horizontally, vertical disengagement of the hook and plate being impossible in any position thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination of the haine, the plate B, attached thereto, havingr curved lugs D D, formed with enlarged recesses c c, with the haine-hook F, having studs G G flattened at one side and removably engaging lugs D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. 4The combination of the haine and the plate B, secured thereto, having curved lugs D D, shoulder C, and depression E, with the hook F, having enlargementf, and .fiattened cylindrical studs G G, all substantially as specified. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aihx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID J. MARTIN.
