SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,457, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed July 19,1888. Serial No. 280,413. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED SIEBERT, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is such a full, clear,'concise, and exact description as will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of pumps employed in connection with gas-compressing and refrigerating apparatus for introducing the oil or lubricatingliquid into the compressor; and it consists in the construction of the piston chamber, winged piston, reciprocating valve, and openings for receiving and discharging the oil or other liquid, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a pump embodying my improvements, and is taken on the line :0 0c of Fig. 2, which is a cross-section of the same.
The pistonchamber A is provided with port a for admitting oil supplied through the pipe a, a check-valve a preventing any backward-flow of oil through the same, and also wit-h discharge-passages a a on each side of said port, which passages may connect with pipes leading to the same or difierent compressors. WVithin the piston-chamber is the valve B, having outer rounded sides which bear against the inner sides of the chamber, and as the valve B is given an oscillating motion successively open and close the passages a a The valve B is preferably mounted on trunnions I) Z) and provided with end pieces or plates 1) b, the upper peripheries of which bear against the inner wall of the piston-chamber, and one of the end pieces may be cast integrally with the main portion of the valve, while the opposite piece is formed separately and secured thereto to allow for the insertion of the wing-piston C, which, mounted on the rod 0, extends between the end pieces and bears both upon the valve and the inner surface of the chamber. If desired, however, the end pieces b b may be dispensed with and the wing-piston made to extend the entire length of the charm ber, and the valve B may be formed to rest simply upon its rounded sides without the supporting-trunnions; but such construction to be operative requires much more careful fitting of parts, does not wear as Well, and is more liable to get out of order. Upon the outer end of the rod 0 may be secured a crank-arm and suitable oscillating connections, and beneath the valve are arranged stops 6 e, for checking the oscillating motion thereof. As the wing-piston O swings around, pressure is brought to bear upon the oil admitted from the port a, which transmits a pressure upon one side of the Valve B and partially turning the same frees the outletpassage sealed thereby, when the volume of oil in the chamber is discharged, while an equal quantity is admitted on the opposite side of the piston, which by a reverse movement is forced out in like manner through the other opening.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pump, the combination of a pistonchamber having two discharge-passages leading therefrom, and an intermediary port through which the oil or other liquid is admitted, a valve within said chamber provided with outer rounded sides bearing against the inner sides thereof and adapted to receive an oscillating motion and open and seal said discharge -passages, a wing-piston bearing upon said valve and against the inner wall of said chamber, and a piston-rod adapted to operate said piston, whereby an oscillating motion is given said valve and the liquid discharged, substantially as described.
2.
