To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANDREW BARTLETT PURINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westborough, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful -I1n provements in a Combined Cane and Stool; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I

My invention relates to a combined cane and camp-stool, and my object is to produce such a device which,when used as a cane,will present a compact and neat appearance and when taken apart and fitted together will form a comfortable and strong stool or seat.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts, more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my device in the form of a cane; Fig. 2, a side perspective of it when used as a stool, and Fig. 3 a detail view.

The reference-letters A and B indicate the two main sections of my device, which are of such a length that when fitted together they will have a length equal to that of an ordinary cane. These sections are made partially hollow, and are'fitted with metallic collars or sleeves a and b on their extremities,which are adapted to telescope, as shown in Fig. 1.

When my device is employed as a stool, the sections A and B are hinged or pivoted together by means of a joint, which consists of a plate 0, secured to the section A and provided wit-h a projection c,which fits a key-hole or slot (1 in a plate D, secured to the section B. The projection c is formed with a rounded head 0, flattened on either side so that it can be introduced into the hole d and turned,whe11 it cannot be withdrawn from said hole unless turned back to its former position, thus forming What is commonly known as a T-joint. The hollow portion a of the section A is oocupied when the device is employed as a cane by an auxiliary section E. This section is made about one-half the length of the main sections Aand B and has secured in one end a hook F, which is adapted to enter an aperture or slot f in the section A and hook around a pin f,which passes across the slot. A pair of projecting arms or braces G and H are hinged in the other end of this section, and these arms when folded in fit in longitudinal slots 9 and h, extending the length of the it section. These arms orbraces are confined in place in the slots by a loose sleeve I on the end of the section. This sleeve has a slot 1', which is made'to register with the slots gand h when it is desired to fold up the arms G and H. After said arms have been fitted into the slots the sleeve can be turned, and they will thus be confined in place. These arms or braces have hooks g and h on their outer extremities, which hook around pins m and 11, respectively, in apertures 01' slots M and N cut in the lower extremities of the main sections A and B. The hollow portion of the section B is occupied by the canvas seat 0, which is rolled up and provided with a string 0 and a weight 0' on the end of the string, by means of which it can be withdrawn from the hollow section. When it is desired to use the device as a seat, this canvas portion is stretched across between the tops of the main sections and is hooked to the same by means of the hooks p 19 on either end of said seat portion and the slots p'p, formed in the metallic collars a and b.

The preferred manner of constructing my device having been set forth, I will now proceed to describe the way in which it is operated.

WVhen the device is used as a cane, the two parts A and B are fitted together, as shown in Fig. 1, and the auxiliary section and the canvas seatare placed in the hollow portion of the sections.

Now, when it is desired to employ my device as a stool or seat, the two main sections are pulled apart and the auxiliary section and the canvas piece are taken out of the hollow sections. The two main portions are now hooked together by means of the projection c and the key-hole d, andthe hook F is placed in the slot f and hooked around the pin f. The arms or braces G and H are now opened out and hooked, respectively, in the slots M and N. The lower end of the section E is allowed to rest on the ground, and thus the stool is provided with three legs, whereby it will stand alone. The canvas seat 0 is next stretched across the top of the stool and hooked at either end to the tops of the main sections. A complete, comfortable, and strong stool is thus formed, which can be conveniently used at ball-games and other places of amusement when standing room only can be had.

It is evident that many slight changes might be made in the construction and use of my invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof; hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction herein shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a combined cane and stool, a pair of main sections arranged to be removably secured together, a seat portion connecting the tops of said sections, and a third'section arranged to be removably secured to one of said main sections, substantially as described.

2. In a combined cane and stool, the combination of a pair of main sections arranged to be removably secured together, an auxiliary section arranged to be removably secured to one of said main sections, arms or braces con necting said auxiliary section and said main sections, and a seat portion connecting the tops of said main sections, substantially as described.

3. In a combined cane and stool, the combination of a pair of main sections removably jointed together, a third section arranged to fit within one of said main sections: and provided with arms or braces which connect with said main sections, and a seat portion connecting the tops of the main sections, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.

In a combined cane and stool, the combination of a pair of main sections removably connected together, a seat portion connectin g the tops of said sections, an auxiliary section having longitudinal. slots formed therein, and arms or braces arranged to fold into said slots, substantially as described.

5: In a combined cane and stool, the combination of the main sections removably secured together, a seatportion connecting the tops of said sections, an auxiliary section adapted to fit within one of said main sections and provided with slots, and arms or braces arranged to fold in said slots, in the manner and for the purpose described.

6. In a combined cane and stool, a pair of main sections removably secured together, a seat portion connecting the tops of said sections, a third section havinglongitudinal slots formed therein, arms or braces adapted to fold into said slots, and a loose sleeve on said third section provided with an aperture, by means of which said longitudinal slots are opened and closed, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
