CAN
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,647, dated January 21, 1890. Application filed May 24:, 1889. $erial No. 311,955. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL B. DENISON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to that class of cans usually made of tin for the reception and preservation of articles, such as condensed milk or other liquids or solids.
The invention has for its object the making of a cover for such can, which will be practically air and liquid tight without the necessity of the employment of solder. It is especially and immediately applicable in practice for the reception and transportation of condensed milk, as above described.
The bottom and sides of the can may be made in any suitable way. The top of the can formed for the reception of the cover is is by preference, made slightly inclined, as
the side of the lip D is made to have a slight inward projection. These deviations from the vertical and horizontal have been slightly exaggerated in the drawing, so as to render them more clear. The cover F is provided with an upper lip at G, fitting upon the top of the can, as indicated, a downwardly-inclined portion H, fitting accurately against the part D, and an inwardly-projecting portion K, fitting against the part E, While the center of the cover is made dish-shaped, as at L, for the purpose of giving increased strength and resiliency at that portion. This cover is likewise by preference made in a die, so as exactly to fit the innardly-projecu ing lip at the top of the can. When the dies are accurately made, it is found that the cover will fit so accurately against the surrounding rim as to be practically air-tight, while it may be opened by a knife or other sharp edge interposed between the outwardlyprojecting lip of the cover and the top of the can. By making the parts D and H somewhat inclined from the perpendicular, as indicated, the cover has a wedge action when forced in position, thereby insuring a tight fit. By making the part E somewhat inclined from the horizontal the tendency of the liquid to lodge in that part is avoided, since it tends to drain toward the center of the can. The necessary resiliency or springiness to cause a tight fit of the exterior parts is secured by the dishing shown at L, the said dishing being so arranged, as shown, as to press downward and laterally, so as to cause a tight fit bot-h beneath and at the sides of the cover.
It is obvious that the parts of the can itself, as usually made, will be fastened together by solder; but the can may be arranged in any ordinary or usual manner.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a can-cover lip consisting of a surface projecting into the can at a slight angle from the side of the can, an inner lip projecting farther toward the center of the can at an inclination from the horizontal, and a lid or cover having a side and lower surface fitting the two angular parts of the lip of the can, the whole forminga tight joint without solder, thereby permitting of the removal and replacement of the cover, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the can-lip shown, having the exterior lip or bent portion B, projcting around the outside of the can, the inclined portion D, projecting downward and towardthe center of the can, and the inclined portion E, projecting toward the center of the can and downward, said portions formed of one piece of metal, each lying at an angle to the adjacent part, the coverF fitting the same and having the angular surfaces G, H, and K, and the dish-shaped portion L, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
DANIEL B. DENISON. Witnesses:
