Description

NITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
llVlPROVED LUBRICATING COMPOUND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 11,840, dated March 8, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GLADDEN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Lubricant; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the ingredients and of the mode of compounding" the same. V
The objectof my invention is a composition of matter adapted for the lubrication'of rubbing-surfaces, and having the following advantages:
First, it is not liable to become hard orgummy, like coal-tar and many other lubricants.
Second, it possesses the singular property of remaining moist or semi-fluid until entirely Worn out.
Third, it is but little affected by changes of temperature.
Fourth, it is remarkably exempt from the liability of burning on the axle.
Fifth, its cost is less than half that of pine tar, to which it is far superior in quality as an efficient and enduring lubricant.
My lubricant is composed and compounded in manner followingi Take, by measure, residuum from the distillation of rock-oil or petroleum, such as willhave the consistence of thick molasses at a temperature of 60 Fahrenheit,
two parts; common pine-tar, one part; pulverized black-lead, one part. Melt, without boiling, the residuum and thepine-tar together, and when well blended stirin slowly the blacklead. The whole process after pulverization ot' the black-lead should consume about halt an hour. When Well blended the composition may be poured into casks. or other vessels for use.
I claim herein as new and of my invention A lubricant composed of residuum from the distillation of petroleum, pine-tar, and plumbago, compounded substantially in proportions and manner specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. GEORGE W. GLADDEN. 'Witnesses:
Gno. H. KNIGHT, E1). M. BROWN.
