Description
(No Model.)
0. P. LOOHMANN. DAMPING DEVICE FOR MUSIO BOXES.
No. 417,650. Patented Dec. 17, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSKAR PAUL LOCHMANN, OF GOHLIS, NEAR LEIPSIO, SAXONY, GERMANY.
DAMPING DEVICE FOR MUSIC-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,650, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed May 27, 1889. Serial No. 312,201. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR PAUL LOOHMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia and Emperor of Germany, residing at Gohlis, near Leipsic,
in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Damping Devices for Music-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a damping device for music-boxes having reeds or tongues vibrated by a star-wheel.
The invention consists in the various features of improvement more fully pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1, 3, and 5 are sectional face views of my improved damping device, showing the same in different positions. Figs. 2, 4, and 6 are end views of Figs. 1, 3, and 5, respectively.
The letter 2 represents a reed attached to support 2. The free end of reed zis vibrated by a star-wheel b, the teeth I II III, &c., of which momentarily depress the reed upon the revolution of the star-wheel.
c is a spring-damper secured to support 0 and adapted to come into contact at its free end with reed z. The damper c has an in- .wardly-bent projection or shoulder c placed in the path of the star-wheel Z).
The operation of the device is as follows:
\Vhile one of the teeth of wheel I) vibrates reed a the succeeding tooth bears against shoulder c and holds the damper away from the reed. Fig. 1 shows the tooth I immediately after it has vibrated reed ,2, while tooth II holds off the damper. After tooth II has cleared shoulder c the dampercleans against the reed and softens the sound before the reed is struck by tooth II. This position is shown in Fig. 3. Shortly before tooth II comes into contact with the reed the damper is raised by tooth III, so that the reed may vibrate freely when being struck by tooth II. Fig. 5 shows the position of the parts when the reed is vibrated by tooth II. By the above-described arrangement the reed is alternately liberated and engaged by the damper as the wheel is revolved.
WVhat I claim is The combination of vibrating reed z with vibrating spring-damper 0, having shoulder 0 and with the star-wheel 12, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
OSKAR PAUL LOCHMANN.
