JOHN VILSON, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HERBERT H. SANDER- SON, TRUSTEE, OF SAME PLACE.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,303, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed February 25, 1889- Serial No. 301,035. (No model.)
To all 1071/0111/ it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city,in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates io improvements in the construction of steam-boilers, whereby it is designed to provide boilers of high etliciency with economy of fuel and cheapness of construction, as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in whichm Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved boilerand its inclosing-walls, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same.
In an upright cylindrical shell a of boilerplate, having a series of exterior radiating tubes b, capped or plugged at the outer ends and tapped or expanded at the inner ends into the shell, I arrange the upright cylindrical circulating-shell c, open at the top and terminating short of the head of shell a, and having other radiating tubes d, smaller than tubes b and projecting into them, and being open at both ends, and through the center of the shell a, and also through this circulatingshell c, I arrange the downdraft-iiue e, with the feed-water pipe f connected for the induction of the feed-water inside of the circulating-shell c, thus making avery simple and cheap boiler, which I set in the cylindrical furnace-wall c, covered at the top with a dome h, and having the underground tine-connection 1I of the flue e with the chimney j, and also having the lire-grate k, surrounding the boiler, with a sufficient number of fire-doors Z to enable the firing all round the boiler for rapid steaming.
The heat first passes up the sides of shell a and between the tubes with powerful effeet, then passes over the top and returns down through the central flue with additional effect, while the water passing first into circulati11g-cylinder b distributes through tubes d and c into the space between circulatingcylinder c and shell a, and upward therein over the top of cylinder I), and down in it to the pipes d, so as to have rapid and effective circulation commensurate with the great iiring capacity of the furnace completely surrounding the boiler, and together therewith affording great steaming capacity relatively to size.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the upright boilershell a, having the tubes b, radiating from the exterior and closed at the outer ends, of the circulating-shell c, standing upright in shell a, and having tubes. d radiating from it and extending into tubes b, and being open at both ends, also thedowndraft-flue e, extending through the center of shellct and the circulating-shell, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the upright boilershell a, having the tubes b, radiating from the exterior of the downdraft-ilue through the center of the boiler, the inclosing-wall closed over the top of the boiler, and the annular lire-grate encircling the boiler, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OllN IVILSON.
