CABLE-G RIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,673, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed May 7, 1889. ,Serial No.3091926. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JOHN W. GENTRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland,
' in the county of Alameda and State of Calitain novel features in the construction and jaws removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line :20 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the lower end of the standard, showing one of the spindles on which one of the cable friction-rollers is mounted. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower gripperjaw and its guide-frame. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the upper grip ping-jaw and its guide-frame. Fig. 7 .is a vertical transverse section of the lower clamping-j aw. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the detachable gripperface for the upper jaw. Fig. 9 is an enlarged vertical section of one of the guiding pulleys or rollers.
The standard which supports the parts consists of the side frame A, made flaring for about one-half of its length and connected at its upper end by the arching bar A, which forms the segmentalrack, hereinafter referred to, and connected at its lower end by a crossbar A forming an open or skeleton frame.
The side frame-bars A for a portion of their length, or that portion which is made straight, are each provided with a rib or flange a, to form a guideway for the guideframe 0 of the upper gripping-jaw. This frame is made in bow or inverted-U form,
and has connected to its lower end the gripping-jaw C. Thisgripping-jaw is made with a removable gripping-face 0 connected to the main portion by means of cars formed thereon engaging sockets in the main portion and pins or bolts 0 passin th rough the same. 6o
The inner and outer faces of the bow-frame are provided with ribs or flanges a, the outer ones to engage the ribs a on the frame-bars A and the inner ones to engage and form a guide or track for the clamp-frame D of the lower jaw, which is provided with similar flanges a to engage the same.
Upon the lower end of the frame D is mounted the lower gripping-jaw D, also provided with a removable gripping-face; but in this case the gripping-face is secured to the main portion by means of tongue-and-groove or dovetail connection, and with a screw d to hold said parts together. a
The gripping-faces of the jaws are made removable, so that new faces can be substituted as the same become worn.
In suitable bearings formed with or secured to the upper gripper-jaw O are mounted frictionrollers d, to prevent friction in passing around curves. Similar friction-rollers d are secured in suitable bearings on the opposite side in the standard A for a similar purpose.
Near the upper end of the frame A, adjacent to the segmental rack, are secured crossbars E, and centrally of and between which is pivoted a rocking arm or walking-beam E, one arm of which is connected through suitable links with the frame C, while the other arm is connected to the frame D through similar links. By therocking of said armor walking-beam is made to move the frames in suchmanner as to cause the gripping-jaws to hold the lever, and with it the gripping-jaws,
at any desired position.
Onthe lower end of the frame A are mounted friction-rollers H for guiding and forming a support for the cable to hold'the same in combination, with the supporting-frame having at its lower end grooved carrying-rollers, one at each corner,of the guide-frame arranged to slide in said supporting-frame and having at its lower end a gripping-jaw and immediately above said jaw frictional rolls, the clamp-frame sliding in said guide-frame and provided at its lower end with a grippingjaw, and means to actuate said jaw-carrying frames, substantially as set forth.
2. In a gripping device for cable roads, the combination of the frames to which the gripping-jaws are connected moving one within the other, the rocking arm or beam, the links connected to the rocking beam and to the frames, and the lever for rocking the beam, substantially as set forth.
3. In a gripping device for cable roads, the combination of the gripper-frame provided with the movable gripping-jaws carrying the friction-rollers, and the frame having the friction-rollers connected thereto on the opposite side to engage the groove and prevent friction in turning curves, as set forth.
4. In a gripping device for cable roads, the combination of the supporting-frame provided with the ribs or flanges, the bow or inverted-U frame carrying one gripping-jaw mounted therein and provided with similar flanges on both its inner and outer faces, and the central bar or frame carrying the other gripping-jaw adapted to move in the inverted-U frame, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. GENTRY. [L. s.]
