Description

' G. DUNHAM.
Land-Roller.
Patented Octr 20, 1863.
' NJETERB, FHDTD-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTDPLJ} D,
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM HESTON,
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN F-l ELD-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,380, dated October 20, 1863.
Bedford, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved 'Roller for Rolling Land; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to they accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the linewaz; Fig.2,afront view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a roller for rolling land, which will conform to the irregularities of the surface over which it passes, and thereby perform its work in amore thorough manner than those previously constructed.
To this end the invention consists in arranging three rollers on separate or independent shafts or axes in such a manner that the rollers, as the machine is drawn along, will be allowed to adjust themselves to the inequalities of the surface of ground.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describeit.
A represents a box, of rectangular form, which has a draft-pole, B, attached to it and two pendants, a a, at each side.
0 O are two rectangular frames, in each of which a roller, D, is placed and allowed to rotate freely. These frames are fitted one between the two pendants a a, at each side of the box, and the frames are connected to the pendants by pivots or pins 1), which pass into the centers of the front and back cross-pieces of'the frames 0.
The draft-pole B extends along underneath the box A, and projects beyond its back part a certain distance to admit of being connected I by a universaljoint, E, to a tongue, 1*, on which a box, G, is placed, the latter having a pendent frame, 0, projecting down from it, one near each end, and in which the ends of the shaft cl of a roller, H, are fitted. The rollers H D D are all of the same diameter, and may be constructed in any proper manner of either iron or wood, the roller H being in line with the center of the space between the rollers D D. Any kindof a universaljoint, E, may also be employed for connecting the draft-pole B and tongue F.
The boxes A G are for the purpose of loadin g the machine to increase the crushing-power of the rollers as may be desired.
To the box A an inclined bar, I,is attached, on which a drivers seat, J, is secured.
From the above description it will be seen that the three rollers H I) D have separate or independent adjusting movements, so that each can pass into hollows over rolling elevations and inclined surfaces independently of the others, and the ground therefore,if uneven, may be thoroughly rolled-a resultnotattained by any ordinary roller in use. In lieu of boxes AG, suitableframes may be used; but the boxes are preferable, as they form a receptacle for stones, in order to load the rollers when necessary.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The rollers D D, fitted in frames 0 0, attached to the box A or a suitable frame, as shown, in combination with the roller H, attached to a box, G, or a suitable frame, which is connected to' the frame or box A of the rollers D by a universaljoint, E, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
