Description

(No Model.)
W. J. GOHN. CORN GULTIVATOR.
No. 403,426. Patented May 14, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM JAMES GOHN, OF OAKlVOOD, ILLINOIS.
CORN-CULTIVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,426, dated May 14, 1889. Application filed January 24, 1889. Serial No. 297,363. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM JAMEs GoHN, of Oakwood, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Corn-Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cultivators, the object of the same being to provide a self adjusting arch attachment which may be secured to any cultivator.
A further obj eot is to provide an attachment of such character as will enable the operator to have control of both sides of the cultivator by the employment of either hand for the purpose of keeping the shovels at a fixed distance from each other while the same are making side motions, also to enable the operator to widen or narrow the distance between the shovels, thereby enabling the same to be set so as to throw the soil toward the corn, and thereby prevent the shovels from spreading.
IVith these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front View of the device. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of the brace and socket. Fig.
4 is a top plan View, and Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation.
The vertical rods A are parallel to each other, as shown, and are curved at the top toward each other, forming an arch. The ends B of the rods A engage the sleeve C, and are adjustable therein by means of the bolt-holes D, formed in the rods and sleeve, the same being adapted to register with each other at suitable intervals. The bolts E engage said holes D, and have secured to their lower curved ends the braces F, the lower ends of which are bent and passed through the holes G in the rods A.
The lower ends of the rods A are journaled in the boxes H, the same being secured between the forked ends of each of the beams I, serving as a brace therefor and enabling the side motions of the shovels without any strain being communicated to the beams I, which are pivoted to the axle K.
It will be seen that by the employment of the boxes H the beams I may be adjusted relative to each other in connection with the rods A and the sleeve 0 without difficulty or disarrangement of the parts below the sleeve.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cultivator, the rods A, adjustably secured in the sleeve 0, the lower ends of said rods being journaled in the boxes II, which are secured to the beams I, the rods A being adj ustably secured by means of the braces F, secured to said rods and the sleeve 0, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
WILLIAM JAMES GOHN.
