UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL STRAUSS, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
SCARF-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,868, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed January 7, 1889. Serial No. 295,657. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, CARL STRAUss, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scarf-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to gentlemens neckscarfs designed to cover a portion of the shirtbosom left exposed by the vest of the wearer, and which have had permanently attached to one of their tying ends or tabs a retaining device or clamp for preventing the scarf from riding up or getting out of place; and the invention consists in the combination, with the scarf, of a permanently-attached spring-clamp or retaining device of peculiar construction and adapted to engage with the shirt-bosom of the wearer, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l represents a view in perspective of a gentlemans scarf with an attached fastening applied to the inner face of the tying end of the scarf in accordance With my invention, said fastening being shown as thrown open; Fig. 2, an inner face View of the tying end portion of the scarf in part, with the fastening seen in its closed position applied Fig. 3 is a transverse section upon the line @c Qc in Fig. 2 Fig. 4, a view in perspective of the fastener detached, and Fig. 5 a View of an individual with scarf applied and the latter secured in position by the fastener. y
A indicates the main portion of the scarf, and b the tying end portion thereof, which, after being passed around the neck of the wearer and through the knot or loop-like portion c, it is necessary to secure below to prevent the scarf from riding up or getting out of place. For this purpose I permanently attach to the lower part of the tying end portion b of the -scarf a spring-clamp fastener, B, which is adapted to engage with the bosom of the shirt-as, for instance, by constructing said fastener with a bent tongue, el, which may or may not be roughened or toothed Von its inner surface, as shown at e, Fig. 4, and 5o which is pivoted to work in lugs f f upon la slotted spring-plate, g, through which a lip on the back end of the tongue passes and bears against a base-plate, h. This base-plate has the ends of the spring-plate'g riveted to it, 55 and the same is constructed with an enlarged spread ilat portion, k, having a series of peri foral-rions, s, in it to provide for stitching-as by thread, fi, in Figs. 1 and S-t-he spring-clamp to the scarf. The whole of the clamp, eXcept- 6o ing the tongue d, may be concealed within the scarf.
The tongue is held closed by the spring-` plate g and is opened against the tension of the spring. The whole clamp,'being of a flat 65 construction, forms no objectionable protuberance, is cheap, and may be easily attached to the scarf by stitching, and when once secured to the scarf never requires to be removed, but will always be an appendage to 7o the scarf ready for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spring-clamp B, consisting of the pivoted tongue (l, slotted springplate-g, and the. base-plate h, having a spread flat portion, lc, provided with stitching-perforations s, in combinat-ion with the scarf to which it is attached, substantially as herein shown and described, 8o and for the purpose specified.
