UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REINI'IOLD STEINEOKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NESTED BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,866, dated May 7, 1889.
Application filed March 13, 1889. Serial No. 303,149. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REINHOLD STEINEOKE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nested Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of a set of nested boxes of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of the hinged portion thereof.
The object of this invention is to so construct nested boxes (that is to say, double boxes, one contained within the other) that when the lid of the outer box is opened the lid of the inner box will thereb'y also be opened, and yet each box have its own characteristic lid. Such nested boxes are useful for many purposes. In the drawings the invention is shown applied to cigar-boxes, where the inner box, A, is of wood and the outer box, B, of metal, the wooden box containing the cigars, the metal box preventing the evaporation of moisture; but such boxes are also useful for many other purposes, and I do not confine myself to the use of the invention for cigars. It is very evident that a person using such boxes will find it desirable and in fact necessary that, their contents be displayed whenever he opens the lid of the outer box. To this end I make the lid 0 of the outer box with a dependent flange, a, and hinge the same at b to the body of the box B. The lid D of the inner box, A, is hinged at (Z.
It Will be seen from Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings that the hinge of the inner box is on a high er plane than the hinge of the outer box. Consequently when the lid 0 of the outer box is swung'open from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 to that shown by dotted lines the front flange, a, of the lid 0 will bind on the front edge of the lid D, and will thus carry the lid D up with it until the rearmost position is attained, (which is also shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2,) When the lids may separate. Hence in opening and also in closing the box the person using it has only to handle the outer lid, 0. The front flange, a, of the lid 0, being of thin metal, is slightly flexible, and the person opening the box will naturally press with the finger against this front flange, as is indicated in the drawings, thus binding the lids together in the starting operation of the opening. I
The binding action of the front flange, a, upon the front edge of the lid D during the motion of the lid 0 while opening the box is dependent upon the fact that the hinge d is higher than the hinge b and that the circle described by the swinging of the lid D is eccentric to that described by the lid 0.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- The combination, in nested boxes, of the inner box, A, and its hinged lid D with the outer box, B, and its hinged lid 0, said hinged lid 0 having the dependent flangea, the hinge b of the lid 0 being lower than the hinge d of the lid D, substantially as herein shown and described.
