Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. DAVID EDWARD IIERIBET, OF AMSTERDAM, NEIV YORK.
'INHALER.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,593, dated May 7,1889.
Application filed September 8,1888. Serial No. 284,916. iNoinodel.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAV-ID EDWARD HER- BET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Inhalers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in inhalers for catarrhal and similar diseases; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inhaler embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view. Fig. 3 is a sectional'view taken longitudinally through the'cups and their connections.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the boiler of the improved inhaler, which is divided by a vertical partition into two compartments, B and B, having openings b and b at their tops, which are covered, respectively, by the screw-caps C and O.
D represents a short tube, which is affixed to the top of the boiler and communicates with the compartment 13; and E represents a conductor-tube, which is fitted on the tube D and is adapted to convey the vapor to the nostrils or mouth of the patient. A short tube, F, is afiixed to the cap O and communicates with the interior of the compartment B, and the upper end of this short tube is closed by a small removable tip, f.
G represents a horizontal pipe, to the ends of which are attached the cups H H, and with which the longitudinal bore of the said pipe communicates, and the pipe is provided at its center with a transverse opening, g, which fits on the short tube F below its top, f, and is held thereon by the said tip. The tube F is provided in one side with a small opening, f, which is adapted to register with the bore of the horizontal pipe, so as to communicate with one of the cups, and when the said pipe is in the proper position to align one of the arms with the opening f a depending stud or de tent, I, at the center of the pipe engages a socket or keeper, K, on the side of the tube F. It will be seen that only one of the cups can be in communication with the compartment B at one time. These cupsare provided with the screw-caps L L, having short vertical tubes M M, upon which the con ductortube E may be fitted.
The operation of the inhaler is as follows: Clear water is placed in the compartment B, and any suitable medicines, in either the dry or Wet form, are placed in the cups, and in the compartment 13,1 preferably place a medicated liquid. Heat is now applied, and the medicated vapor which arises from the liquid in the compartment 13 passes up through the conductor-tube to the nostrils or mouth of the patient. If the compartment B is not being used, however, the vapor from the water in the compartment B passes up through the short tube F, through one arm of the pipe G, through the cup containing the medicine, (thus becoming impregnated thereby,) and through the conductor-tube, which must be attached to the short tube at the top of the cup which is being used.
The advantage of the improved inhaler is that it enables two or three diiferent remedies to be applied in quick succession, as this is desirable in some cases. For instance, one
rem edy may be applied to loosen and dislodge the secretions or accumulations, and another may be used to heal affected parts, &c.
It will be seen that the tube- F is tapered toward its upper end, so that when the pipe G is raised to release the stud or detent I from its socket or keeper it will turn easily on the pipe F, and when the said pipe is lowered to re-engage the stud or detent a tight joint is formed around the tube F and the vapor is prevented from escaping.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In an inhaler, the boiler having a tapered tube, F, communicating with its upper end and provided with an opening, f, the pipe G, provided with a transverse opening fitting over the upper .end of the tube F, so that the bore of the pipe registers with the opening f and the cups on the ends of the pipe provided with outlet-tubes, substantially as specified.
2. In an inhaler, the boiler provided with avertical tapered tube, F, an opening, f near its upper end, the tip f, fitting on the upper end of the said tube, the horizontal pipe G,
provided with-a transverse opening, g, fitting on the pipe G, to engage a socket or keeper on the side of the tapered tube, and the cups on the ends of the pipe G and provided with outlet-tubes, substantially as specified.
3. In an inhaler, the boiler B, having a screw-cap covering an opening in its top, the tube F, affixed to the said cap and provided with an opening, f, the revolnble pipe G, fitting on. the tube F and adapted to have one of its arms aligned with the opening f, the cups on the ends of the pipe G, and the screwcaps on the said cups provided with tubes M M, substantially as specified.
4. Inan inhaler, the boiler provided with the compartments B B, provided with openings in their upper ends, which are covered by the screw-caps G C, the short tube D, communicating with the compartment B, the condnctor-tnbe E, the short tube F, aflixed to the screw-cap C, the horizontal pipe swiveled on the pipeF and communicating therewith, and the cups on the endsof the said pipe and provided with short outlet-tubes, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID EDWARD HERBET.
