TABLE COVER FASTENER.
No. 401,283. Patented Apr. 9, 18 89L fiELL thou 121 0 I L N. PETERS. Frwwumn UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND BURKE KNAPP AND HENRY LOUIS THOMPSON, OF SAN JAOINTO, CALIFORNIA.
TABLE-COVER FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,283, dated April 9, 1889. Application filed Tune 8, 1888. $erial No. 276,538. (No model.)
Our invention relates to a table-cover fastener; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of devices, fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a table, the cover of which is held in place by the improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a side view of the band with the covering flap or plate thrown back. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the parts detached. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the joint between the meeting ends of the band.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a metallic band passing around the top of the table, (which may be round, square, elliptical, or any other ordinary shape) and it is provided at suitable points with perforations B, through which pass small staples O, which are driven into the table-top. One end of the band is provided with a tongue, D, which passes through a vertical slot, E, in the other end of the band, and the said tongue is provided with a series of apertures, F, which align with a longitudinal slot, G, in the other end of the band, whereby the staple H, which passes through the apertures also passes through the slot, engages the table-top.
I represents a covering flap or plate to conceal the joint between the ends of the band, and it is provided near oneend with a vertical slot, K, to receive the band, as shown in .Fig. 2, and at the other end with an aperture, L, through which a screw, M, passes. This screw passes through the inner end of the slot G and engages the table -top. This band passes firmly upon the table-cover and holds it more smoothly spread or stretched than tacks, for the reason that the intervals between the tacks allow the cover to stretch or bulge.
The fastener can be made to suit any size and shape of table, and the ends are readily and firmly secured together. The appearance of a table the cover of which is held on by the improved fastener is novel and ornamental.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim 1. In a fastener for table-top covers, the combination, with the flat band having its meeting ends secured together, of the detachable covering fiap or plate provided with a transverse slotiitting over the said hand and covering the joint between the meeting ends of the band, substantially as specified.
2. The fastener for table-top covers, con- G, and a vertical slot, E, in one end, the tongue on the opposite end passing through the vertical slot and having a series of apertures registering with the slot G, and the staple sisting of a band having a longitudinal slot,
passing through the apertures and the slot G and engaging the table-top, substantially as specified.
3. In a fastener for table-top covers, the metallic band having slots E and G therein,
the apertured tongue passing through the slot ceive the band and an aperture to receive a 8 screw, substantially as specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
EDMUND BURKE KNAPP. HENRY LOUIS THOMPSON.
