SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,937, dated April 9, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY WILLIAM MiiNOH, of Somerville, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fountain Window-Cleaners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object to provide a novel window-washing brush.

My improved brush for washing windows in stores, &c., is attached to a reservoir or receptacle for water, and has a series of outlets or discharge-nozzles, preferably extended through the base or head of the brush, and supplying water to the bristles gradually to enable the water to be used economically. The reservoir or receptacle is preferably provided with a self-closing or automatically-operated valve adapted to be opened, as herein shown, by gravity when the brush is turned upside down to dip the reservoir or receptacle into a pail or other vessel containing water, and to be closed when the brush is elevated or turned up to wash a window.

My invention therefore consists, essentially, in the combination, with a brush composed of a perforated head and bristles attached thereto, of a receptacle or reservoir secured to-the said head and provided with a handle and an automatically-operated valve, substantially as will be described.

Other features of my invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

The drawing shows a longitudinal section of a brush embodying my invention, the nozzles or discharge-outlets being shown enlarged to enable them to be more clearly seen.

The brush composed of the preferably wooden head or base a and bristles a, securely fastened therein in the usual manner, is secured to a reservoir or receptacle, a preferably of metal, the said metallic receptacle or reservoir being shown as corrugated at its opposite ends to obtain strength.-

The receptacle or reservoir a is preferably cylindrical in shape, and has its end opposite the brushes made convex, the more readily to enter a pail or bucket.

The reservoir a is provided with a valve, (9, hinged, as at b, to the inner side of the said reservoir, and preferably made of such weight as to be readily operated upon by gravity.

The receptacle or reservoir a is provided, as shown, with a false bottom, herein shown as a perforated plate, b having nozzles 19 preferably extended through the base or head a, and-by which the water in the reservoir is discharged in fine streams upon the bristles of the brush, the water following the bristles to their ends, the plate 6 being provided, as shown, with a flange, 12 which is preferably soldered to the reservoir a to render the same Water-tight.

My improved wash-brush has a suitable handle, 0, herein shown as fastened, as by pin 0, into a socket, 0 attached to the side of the reservoir.

In operation the rear end of the reservoir is dipped into a pail or other vessel containing water, and the said water flows into the receptacle or reservoir through the opening in its side normally closedby the valve 1), but which becomes uncovered by the valve as the reservoir is dipped into the vessel containing water, the said valve dropping into the position indicated by dotted lines. When a sufficient or desired amount of water has entered the receptacle a ,the latter is removed from the pail and turned into operative position, with the bristles presented to the window to be Washed, the water in the reservoir flowing through the nozzles or discharge-outlets in substantially fine streams, thus obviating the spilling of the water over the walk or floor, as when the bristles are dipped into the pail or vessel containing the water.

I claim- 1. The combination, with a brush composed of a perforated head and bristles attached thereto, of a receptacle or reservoir secured to the said head and provided with a handle, and an automatically-operated valve, substantially as described.
